On Fridays, on Gazeta.pl, we provide you with CDs that are worth paying attention to, if only to form your own opinion about them. The descriptions below have been prepared on the basis of the publishers’ materials.
The Weeknd – “Dawn FM”
“Dawn FM” is The Weeknd’s fifth studio album, announced with the single “Take My Breath”. The follow-up album to the groundbreaking “After Hours” featured guests such as Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne. Jim Carrey stars as Dawn FM’s announcer who tries to scare us as part of his journey to meet destiny. A short poll conducted among the listeners of Abel Tesfaye I knew immediately after the premiere clearly indicated that the Canadian on the latest album “finally gave birth to his inner Michael Jackson”.
It is likely that this turn of events was influenced by a closer meeting of The Weeknd with Quincy Jones. We will also hear him on “Dawn FM” – not as a producer, but as a narrator of one of the stories told between songs. For some recipients the “Jacksonness” “Dawn FM” is an advantage, for others – a disadvantage related to the huge appetite after “After Hours”. On top of that, let’s add some predictability, after all, The Weeknd was named Jackson’s successor more than a decade ago.
The waves of retromania from “Thriller” and “Bad” sound right – no more and no less. For example, “Here We Go … Again” with the participation of Tyler, the Creator, where we get a substitute for The Weeknd from “Trilogy” (at least in terms of vocals), is much better. Even if “Dawn FM” is far from producing such sparks as with “Blinding Lights” or “In Your Eyes”, there is an opportunity to wiggle freely. Or perhaps reflect on this unfortunate destiny for a moment. Proponents encourage you to listen at least twice.
Dawid Bowie – “Toy: Box”
The album “Toy” was created after David Bowie’s performance at the Glastonbury festival in 2000. The artist entered the studio with the band to record new interpretations of the songs, which he first recorded in 1964-1971. The plan was to prepare the album “old school”: first a recording session with the band, then – selecting the best shots and releasing “Toy” as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in 2001, the technology was not yet able to support the release of the album from week to week, which in the era of streaming services has become a common practice. The premiere of “Toy” finally took place over 20 years later – in November last year. Now we get “Toy: Box”, where apart from the basic version we can find alternative mixes and versions “without electricity, but a bit electric”. For fans – a must-have.
Wadada Leo Smith, Henry Kaiser i Alex Varty – “Pacifica Koral Reef”
Guitarists Henry Kaiser and Alex Varty and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith meet on common musical grounds. “The multidimensional experience that is ‘Pacifica Coral Reef’ was born in the extraordinary imagination of trumpeter and composer Smith, and then settled on a single sheet of paper. It featured twisting lines, bright blocks of spring green and earthy ocher, radiant pools of blue and ancient hieroglyphs, (…) or the Anhkrasmation system, “writes Varty. “Its beauty lies in the combination of visual stimulation, musical notation and a social philosophy that stimulates intuition, imagination and collaboration,” adds the musician and journalist. In short: jazz improvisation promises to be engaging and flowing straight from the heart. You can listen to a foretaste of this 55-minute composition below.
Burial – “Antidawn EP”
“Antidawn reduces Burial’s music to the fumes” – we read in the description of the latest EP of one of the most important artists of the British electronic music scene. “The album explores the zone between the scattered patchwork songwriting and the eerie, open atmosphere of the playing space. In the resulting no man’s land, the lyrics are superior to the song, the lonely phrases color the fog, and the raw and fragmented structure makes time slow down. ‘Antidawn’ feels like it. tell the story of a winter city and something that invites you to plunge into the darkness of the night. The result is both calming and disturbing, producing a silent and eerie glow against the cold. Sometimes it takes your breath away when you enter the ‘wrong place’. time just stops. Intriguing, isn’t it?
