How to dress for a funeral? There are three rules to follow

Funeral clothing is not only a styling that will simply match the occasion, it is also an element of the entire funeral ceremony. As in the case of the theater, philharmonic or wedding party, we have an appropriate dress code, the same applies to funeral clothes.

Funeral clothes, three basic rules

There is no doubt that it is common to wear black for this occasion – it is undoubtedly due to the symbolism of this color. Probably no one will be surprised by the fact that the black color – in Western culture – has been associated with death for centuries, and often also with the lack of hope, sadness and longing. For this reason, people experiencing the death of their loved ones fall into “black despair”, so the linguistic meaning is intertwined with the symbolism of the color itself. In this aspect, it is probably easier to experience your sadness, but it is also worth remembering about the positive side of black during a funeral, which is included in the three basic principles:

  • barwa – the black outfit at the funeral adds seriousness, expresses respect for the deceased, while pointing to the uniqueness of the celebration;
  • moderation – thanks to this type of approach to dress, we will not only adapt to the circumstances, but also express – appropriate for her – humility. Therefore, let’s try not to stand out from the crowd, which does not have to mean a lack of elegance and appropriate style;
  • minimalism – this kind of rule works not only during funeral ceremonies, but in such circumstances it becomes extremely timely and accurate. Therefore, let’s give up unnecessary decorations or accessories, and we will certainly feel properly prepared for the situation and place.

How to dress for a funeral? So not only black

When thinking about “how to dress for a funeral?”, We do not have to be dressed in black from head to toe – especially when we are not the circle of the deceased’s closest relatives. There are theories that indicate that it is for the relatives of the deceased that black clothes should be reserved – this is how they are left with space for sadness and mourning. So what kind of colors come into play on this kind of occasion?

As mentioned earlier, black will of course be very suitable for a funeral, but nothing prevents us from replacing it with other shades from this type of color palette. Therefore, we will not commit a faux pas if we choose shades of graphite, navy blue, gray or brown. Overly patterned costumes and flashy colors may cause us to distract the attention of those arriving from who is most important in a given situation, at the same time depriving the circumstance of its proper character and expression.

What for a funeral? So the cut is important

When choosing an outfit, it is worth remembering not only about subdued colors, but also about the right cut of our styling. So what is worth remembering? Let’s see:

  • simplicity – elegant, simple cuts in the form of a pencil skirt or creased trousers for women, or a minimalist suit appropriate for men, will work perfectly in such circumstances;
  • seriousness – we do not have to give up elegance on the occasion of the last goodbye. However, remember about the appropriate length of the lower garment, i.e. a knee-length dress, as well as covering the shoulders and avoiding too deep necklines. Gentlemen should avoid jeans – even black ones, as well as short-sleeved shirts;
  • adaptation to the weather – it is worth remembering about the appropriate thickness of tights – depending on the weather outside and the time of the year during which the funeral takes place. Therefore, in autumn and winter, remember about a simple, dark, one-color shawl and gloves that complement the whole, and in spring and summer, try to put a scarf, a delicate jacket on your shoulders, or choose an outfit with a 3/4 length sleeve. Shoes should cover the toes and heels – pumps with a heel up to 7 cm will work best in this situation (higher heels can be too provocative). Monochrome ballerinas, moccasins or boots are also an acceptable solution, but in such a situation it is worth avoiding shoes with a sports sole;
  • let’s not go crazy with the accessories – this does not mean, of course, that we should give up delicate ornaments at all. Discreet earrings or pearls are enough, and a small hat or a toque in a dark color will add elegance to the styling. In the case of men, a watch, a belt and clean, elegantly polished shoes will add style and seriousness.
