Lucius Malfoy, a cruel racist, father of Draco Malfoy – this role was given to Jason Isaacs in a series of films about adventures. The actor wanted to become Gilderoy Lockhart, but he lost to the excellent Kenneth Branagh. When he was offered the role of Lucius, he initially refused.
Harry Potter. Jason Isaacs forced his own ideas for Lucius Malfoy
“I was pissed off when they proposed the role of Lucius. I told my agent to refuse,” Jason Isaacs recalled years ago in an interview with Digital Spy. Changed his mind when He received phones from the family throughout the weekendfriends and loved ones convincing him that he must play “Harry Potter”. He quickly became one of the most characteristic characters and a spontaneous film ambassador. He also had a huge impact on how Lucius Malfoy looked in the films.
In books, Lucius Malfoy is a cruel and talented wizard. JK Rowling devoted little paragraphs to his appearance. It was known that he had light hair, a slim face, and he hides the wand in an intricately made cane. The scriptwriters wanted to emphasize his noble origin. Jason Isaacs had his own thoughts on the appearance of the character. While preparing for the role, Isaacs watched the earlier film. He watched Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy behaved on the set. When he was told he was to put on a suit, he protested.
I came to the set before the photos. They showed me a sketch of a guest in a herringbone suit with starled hair like mine. I went to makeupists and hairdressers, and I say: I was hoping for a wig. They say that they have a wig for Dumbledore. So I ask if it will be a one -handed film by Warner Bros. They replied that they were not, but what I actually want – Jason Isaacs recalled in an interview with “Esquire”.
This is how the new Lucius Malfoy was born, whom we know from movies. Distyngen, dressed “in magic”, with long blond hair – At first it was the cheapest wig they had on the set. The actor insisted that Lucius, despising Muggles, could not dress like them. He can’t have “ordinary” short hair like Mugole. He was to stand out.
At costume designers I heard that they had prepared a businessman suit for me. I said that I was hoping for fur, coats, velvet, and ermine. They asked: why, he is a businessman. I replied not. It is not at all. He is a rich aristocrat who never would like to dress like a Muggle! Besides, it will probably be the only opportunity when I play the wizard. Let me dress in magic – he told British television years ago.
The costume section was not ready for such ideas. Fortunately, as an enterprising and ingenious man, Jason Isaacs borrowed one of the curtains, wrapped in her and in blond-peruce went to see the director. Chris Columbus just asked him if he saw Lucius’s sketches and “what he was doing on his mind.” Isaacs managed to convince him to his vision. He also forced the famous Lucius chick, in which the magician hid the wand – although it was a prop known from the book, for some reason he was not planned to be included in the film.
Columbus asked, why did I need a chick, or maybe my leg hurts? I replied that not, none of these things, but the chick would be useful for showing, to strengthen gestures – argued Isaacs.
Jason Isaacs has been pleased to mention the role of Lucius over the years. The possibility of playing a wizard who is imperious, has unlimited magic powers, is insolent and cruel – It all gave him fun. He threw proposals, invented how to show Lucius in a new, non -standard way. “I created new methods of casting spells in individuals, and the director agreed to everything,” he was excited.
