The smell of fresh bread fills the house, children greet a new day happily, and the husband goes out to work in an impeccably ironed shirt. She is the personification of heat, harmony and family peace, cares for the house, cooks, cleans and cares for relationships. She is not chasing promotion and is not in a hurry to meet business meetings, because her mission is to create a safe marina for loved ones. In return, he expects a strong, caring man who will provide the family with stability and make the most important decisions. This is what the idea of the “Tradwife” movement looks like, gathering women who consciously choose to return to traditional roles. Is this reality or just a carefully created image that appears in the social media a fulfilled dream?
What does “tradwife” mean? Women want to focus on the warmth of the home again
“Tradwives” is an abbreviation of “Traditional Wives”, which is traditional wives who voluntarily accept a conservative family model and give up their professional careers for the house. They don’t treat it as a necessity, but. They want to be support for a man, take care of children and create a space full of heat and harmony. This movement has gained popularity thanks to social media, where influencers such as Hannah Neeleman from Ballerina Farm shows idyllic life on a farm, homemade baked goods and family values. Although Hannah herself does not identify as “Tradwife”, her story has become for many women looking for an alternative to a modern busy lifestyle.
The trend itself refers to the ideal of a woman from years ago – wife of the 1950s, who was a guardian of a home fire, where the man played the role of the head of the family. Traditional wives choose husbands with a strong position, ensuring financial stability and making decisions. They value conservative values and often emphasize that feminism took women the opportunity to choose and forced them to work. However, does such a life model really give a sense of fulfillment and is a guarantee of a lasting marriage? Specialists indicate that everyday life is far from the perfect image created in social media.
Are traditional wives happier in relationships? It turns out that not necessarily
As noted by the psychologist Tsar Goodwin in Psychology Today, the traditional role of a woman does not guarantee happiness or sustainability of marriage. Research conducted in Sweden shows that couples dividing domestic duties evenly divorce than those in which the traditional division of roles dominates. Interestingly, in older marriages concluded before 1975, divorce was more likely when the woman took up work. Today, however, this factor is no longer important.
Goodwin also drew attention to the level of satisfaction in a relationship. Couples with equality division of duties are as many as four and a half times more prone to declaring happiness than those functioning according to traditional roles. Even when the division of homework is 70/30, the satisfaction of both sides increases. It was formerly thought that men may value less relationships in which they are involved in homework, but current studies show that just partnership also favors their satisfaction.
Ultimately, the sense of justice counts. If a woman consciously chooses the role of “Tradwife” and feels respected, she can be happy. However, when it is a pressure of loved ones, not a choice, there is frustration. Financial dependence is conducive to control, and in extreme cases makes it difficult to get out of a toxic relationship. In a world seeking equality, it is increasingly difficult to consider the uneven division of roles as natural.
