They reveal the contents of a time capsule hidden under the statue of a Confederate general in the US

Demonstrations against racism in the United States have managed to uncover a time capsule hidden for over 130 years. In the capital of Virginia, the statue of a Confederate general became the focus of protests and, when it was removed, up to two boxes with objects of the time appeared underneath.

The legend said that under the feet of the statue, from 1887, a time capsule had been kept. The sculpture was dedicated to Confederate General Robert Lee, who fought in the Civil War against abolishing slavery.

A tribute that would still stand if it were not for the fact that for two years the monuments of racist characters they have changed their fortunes in America. Thus, last September it was time for Robert Lee to step down from his pedestal in Richmond, Virginia.

Taking advantage of his withdrawal, the famous treasure could be discovered, but what was found was a lead box that contained hardly any objects of little value. A joke sent by the masons who raised the statue in the 19th century. However, the works continued and, much lower down, was the time capsule.

Now, all the pieces have seen the light in the year 2021, after living together for more than a century with water and humidity: “There was more water than we would have liked, but it is not as bad as it could have been,” said Kate Ridgway, curator of the Virginia Department of Historical Resources.

Inside, there was a Confederate flag, symbols of your army or buttons of uniforms, as well as newspapers, documents and a Bible. Objects that show that in the state of Virginia the slavery ideology survived despite having lost the war.
