will take place in two months. It is any time for the final application of the competition songs. The representative of Malta Miriana Conte is to change not only the title, but also the text of the song. In Basel, we will not hear “Kant”, because – according to EBU – the word is too much like English profanity.
Eurovision 2025. Malta is to change the song
Miriana Conte from Malta and her team could expect that “Kant” would be problems. Shortly after Malta’s decision that this singer will represent the country ,. “Kant” broke the BBC regulations, while the public sender from the islands unofficially claimed that there may be problems with the transmission of the competition on the air for this reason. Now Miriana Conte has informed that the European Union of broadcasters, organizer of Eurovision, She ordered her to introduce thorough changes to the song.
I am just making a music video for “Kant”. We were informed that EBU is opposed to using the Maltese word “Kant” in our Eurovision song. I am shocked and disappointed, especially since we have less than a week to report the song. But I promise – the show will continue, Diva doesn’t give up! – Miriana Conte wrote in social media.
The Maltese singer in “Kant” used the game of words. The song is entirely singing in English, while “Kant” is the only word in Maltese it is raining in it. There is no “Kant” in the phrase “Serving Kant” in this case, which can be literally translated as “singing”, and all the less literal as a challenging, bold feminine behavior, if the Maltese “Kant” will be saved in the form of English vulgarism. “Kant” and the British “C*NT” sound the same, which is a problem, e.g. for BBC, which, according to its regulations, cannot allow profanity on the air before 10pm. This may mean that the British broadcaster could not show a fragment of the competition with the song Malta, and this would break the provisions of the contract with the Eurovision itself, which requires the broadcast without. Effect – EBU ordered changes to “Kant”.
EBU interferes with songs for Eurovision
Malta’s problems could be predicted, because in previous years it has repeatedly happened that EBU was blocked in full or in part. The reasons were different. There were blockades for profanity – in 2022 The Latvian group Citi Zeni had to remove the words “p*ssy” and “f*ck” from the song. According to the Streisand effect, when the song “Eat Your Salad” sounded in Turin, viewers sang words blocked by EBU.
A year ago, EBU interfered with Israel’s song. It was decided that the song Eden Golan refers to current political events – in the case of “October Rain” they were references to the Hamas massacre on Israeli. EBU decided that the song was to be changed. Soon after, Eden Golan presented “Hurricane” on the same soundtrack with a slightly changed text – and if someone looks above the literal meaning of the words of the song – with virtually the same message as “October Rain”.
