Greetings from the end of the world. See the monument to mankind who did not look up

“To the Memory of Humanity, which did not look up: – these words appear on the monument erected in the village of Koniec świata. The monument is the largest spray-chrome-plated monolith in Poland. It weighs 1700 kilograms, is 4 meters high, represents a meteorite and thus refers to a huge threat, featured in the latest film Don’t Look Up directed by Adam McKay.

“Don’t look up.” A little subtle film for a little subtle time

In McKay’s film, scientists Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) discover that a comet is orbiting the solar system. The problem is that it is on a collision course with Earth. As if that were not enough, few people care about it, and the society manipulated by the words of politicians (Meryl Streep), instead of stopping and “looking up”, focuses on turning the threat into a joke and profit from it. A comet the size of Mount Everest, approaching our planet, turns out to be a clickable show business topic or a unique opportunity to take a perfect selfie.

“Don’t Look Up” is a film that probably would not have been made without the presidency of Donald Trump. He is a figure known for his many sins against reason and human dignity. Ideas such as the fact that global warming does not exist and that there is no such thing as a climate crisis give it a special place on the dark pages of history. Because when the leader of the most powerful country in the world shows that he does not believe scientists (whom he does not understand), a hellish carnival begins and a spate of conspiracy theories of Twitter sages who feel impunity in their unconscious ignorance. Over the last few years, we have had the opportunity to read various weird concepts on the web. So I’m not surprised that Adam McKay decided that the perfect metaphor for the climate crisis would be the story of a giant comet heading towards the earth that will inevitably kill everyone and everything on the planet.

– The film turned out to be a hit by Netflix, because from December 24, the day of its premiere on the platform, viewers spent over 111 million hours watching it. For comparison – the second-placed film “Unforgivable” starring Sandra Bullock, which also made its debut last week, was watched for “only” 26,600,000 hours.

Returning to the Monument in the End of the World, Netflix warmly encourages not only to come to the town and see the specimen with your own eyes. From December 29, you can also pick up unique souvenirs at the Kraszewice Commune Office. The gadgets will be available while stocks last from 8:00 to 16:00 from Monday to Friday with the slogan: “Me for the End of the World”.
