Today it is considered one of the most important bands in the history of Polish music. Romuald Lipko appointed her to life in 1974 in Lublin. Only a year later they made their debut on the phonographic album “Shadow of the Great Mountain”, which they promoted a song with the same title. Her moving words were inspired by the tragic death of Zbigniew Stepk and Andrzej Grzązek, who died 2 years earlier during the first post -war trip to the Himalayas.
They left the glacier when the avalanche took them. It is about their tragic death that is the “shadow of the great mountain” of the Suflera booth
Stepka was a poet and a radio fascinated by the mountains from an early age. It was he who came up with a crazy idea conquering the virgin peaks of the Western Himalayas together with the eleven members of the Lublin High Mountain Club. When they managed to collect the appropriate equipment and funds, they set off on a multi -week trip. All its participants were trained, they had appropriate courses. Atmospheric conditions and weather also favored them, although this, as is known, changes dynamically at such heights.
On August 17, 1973, Stepka planned to recognize the possibility of entering the CB12 summit, located at 6252 meters. Grzązka, Teresa Rubinowska, who was the only woman during the expedition, and Edward Zawadzki, from the supporting group, remained with him. They entered a 400-meter ice block without any difficulties and everything indicated that the mission would end successfully. When they started to go down, an avalanche, in the face of which they had no chances, started.
Who wrote the words to the song “Shadow of the Great Mountain” Budka Sufler? In this way he celebrated his friend’s tragic death
Rubinowska and Zawadzki returned to the base and informed the other participants about the tragic. After 2 weeks, an attempt was made to find bodies, but to no avail. The only thing that survived was a ice ax belonging to Grzązek. – It was not allowed to enter this ice cream. It was not allowed to take a boy who never saw glaciers in his life – said Zdzisław Czarneckiwho also took part in the expedition in an interview with.
The climbers were honored with a commemorative plaque, which was located at the cemetery at Lipowa Street in Lublin, from which they came. Later, Budka Suflera created a “shadow of the Great Mountain” to which Words were written by Adam Sikorski, privately a friend of Stepka. – This shadow of the great mountain, which hung over the fate of my smiling friend, hung over me all the time – he said in one of the episodes of his program on YouTube.
