Nobody suspected that under the facade of a nice widow there is a merciless killer who killed for profit with cold blood. In her murderous dance she did not spare even her loved ones. Belle Gunness, actually Brynhild Paulsatter Størseth, was born in 1859 in Norway. Already as a pregnant teenager she experienced a tragedy. During the country fun, she was brutally kicked in the stomach, which led to miscarriage. The perpetrator did not suffer, and soon he died of stomach cancer. By coincidence or the first crime of the future “Ducalian Hell”? There is many speculation, but there is no clear answer. Soon after, Belle emigrated to the United States to start a new life, which was marked by death.

The second husband, Peter Gunness, also died in unexplained circumstances. Belle claimed that a meat machine fell on his head. Investigators initially did not believe this version, and the local coroner said it was impossible for the device to cause fatal injuries. However, the widow’s testimonies were so convincing that the case was closed and she received high compensation again.
A similar fate met the adopted daughter Jennie, who suddenly “went to school” and never returned. It was only after the farm’s fire that her remains were found in the pigsty. The disappearance of men who responded to matrimonial ads Belle were equally disturbing. The future adorers were to come with cash to prove serious intentions. The neighbors have repeatedly seen elegantly dressed men at the railway station in La Porte, but none of them returned home. Their fortunes went to the widow, and they, as it later turned out, finished fragmented in the ground, under the feet of pigs.

In 1908, Belle’s farm stood on fire. The bodies of three children and a woman’s headless corpse were found in the ruins. Did they belong to? The sentences were divided. Dozens of massacred bodies of men who had previously reported a date with the widow were discovered in the pigsty. Ray Lamphere, Gunness midfielder, admitted on his deathbed that she had put fire, killed her own offspring and escaped. It is not known to this day whether the woman died in a fire or lived to live in old age, enjoying a fortune of bloody crimes. It is estimated that she could murder from 13 to even 42 people, and some researchers suspect that the number of victims is even greater.
