Monster, or a very described description. Netflix proves that only the book

An animated film from the universe of the Vienzmin Geralt, “Syrena from Głębin” came to the Netflix platform. The production was based on the story “a bit of Christmas”, but the relationship with the literary original is the counting number.

Netflix does not stop in efforts and stubbornly worthy of a better case argues that he understands the prose of Andrzej Sapkowski. In anticipation of the fourth season of the acting series, the second animated full -length film hit the platform. This time we got a story about sirens, a prince in love and the Witcher, who goes to the middle of the conflict.

Netflix returns with a new story about the witcher Geralt

First impression? Pretty goodalthough I had no illusions that I remember “a little dedication” from years ago. I really didn’t remember him at all, except the main characters and the remains of the main thread. This probably caused that the Netflix “sirens from the depths” at first I honestly liked them, although they are not devoid of flaws.

Geralt and Jaskier go to the coastal town of Bremervoord. They are looking for a job – they are completely rinsed, which is why they decide that each of them will accept the first order that will go. They don’t have to wait a long time. Dandelion has the opportunity to sing before the king, and the Witcher is to kill a monster who likes pearls in the pads. Bard quickly finds out that she will be the second performer of the evening – the first is a friend from her youth, beautiful Essi Daven, who quickly expands the male duo The Witcher -Bard to the size of the trio. And Geralt, as always, packs in a much more serious scandalbecause the monster designated to be slaughtered is only the first of the complicated chess batch between two courts: land and undersea. Everything leads to an unusual pair of lovers: Syrena and the young prince.

It is true that the story was very easy to predict, but the ending had a characteristic bend for Sapkowski, and the whole was made so convincingly that for a moment I even thought: “If this was the acting ‘The Witcher’!” And then I returned to the original from the volume “Sword of Destiny”, which I read for the last time over 20 years ago. During this time, the details have been remembered, and the hunger of the new “The Witcher” is always so big that I kindly look at all attempts at screening. Perhaps this is a method to watch what Netflix produces: to watch, not read.

Is it still “The Witcher” or “Little Mermaid”?

“Syrena from the depths” castrated the book The Witcher in several respects. Geralt, although he is the main character, is paradoxically the weakest link in the animated story – what sparkled with sarcasm, a sense of joke and depth, was pressed flat. Dandelion was much better in this respect, which disarms his eternally grim -fired companion. The drawn Geralt is book only in slightly exaggerated fighting scenes. Here, the witcher winds, twitts and triples, jumps, flies, cultivates a real “cropped tiger, hidden dragon” to defeat opponents – but it is not very distant from what ordinary mortals in the Geralt’s universe could attribute to the Witcher if they had the opportunity Watch him live. It is also a bit like James Bond, who will come out of each shooting and a collapsed building, but slightly dusting from dust an impeccable suit. The Witcher is nothing, although this book was wounded or unable to fight, but – although faster than a man – he couldn’t fly.

For an incomprehensible reason, it was also decided to leave the main characters from the story (some also modified) and the remains of the main thread. Indeed, the prince, the threat of conflict and the Witcher for dirty work is in love with the Syrena. But that’s the end – The whole story was thoroughly changed. His feded father took over the tiring and very human features of Prince Aggloval. He tries to convince his son that the marriage of “ribolia” with man is not a happy idea. Sh’eenaz, a beautiful mermaid, a beloved prince, also got a much bigger role. She was shed, which makes her closer to Disney Ariel, even a space for mixing the magic sea tincture of the witch, who – yes – has tentacles like Urszula.

The film itself is Sapkowski’s writing again, but without his ingenuity, without playing with a word and a form of classic fairy tale. This is a “little mermaid” in the version a little more for adultsbut … this is not Sapkowski. In this story, so much was changed that there is still loose relationships with “some sacrifice”, but the whole story clue got lost, drowned in a shallow puddle. I do not speak to this kind of interpretations – why pretend that the adaptation of the written story is made if it changes to such an extent? Of course, on the road, which is overcome from the word written to the film image, there must be changes in the story. However, where the adaptations make insignificant modifications, here they will rip off, where they think slightly, “sirens from the depths” insisted that they would write Sapkowski again using the basic thread and character – as if “again” was to immediately mean “better”. Meanwhile, we would be better as viewers if something completely new was created (theoretically better, because looking at the “pedigree of blood”, you can have reasonable fears about the creativity of the creators) than something that readers will only lead to frustration. And if you can’t have something completely new and good at the same time, why come up with such an angular circle again, since there is a very decent and neatly written literary original? Would any of Sapkowski’s fans complain about the faithful adaptation of prose? I dare to doubt.

The more that “Syrena from the depths” are not completely and hopelessly bad! You can see that someone during this production of Sapkowski read and tried to get a little more than the superficial thread of the Witcher murdering monsters, although due to morality not all. I watched the film in the English language version, which is why I appreciate Douga Cockle, who – as in the game – gave the main hero. Joey Batey and Christina Wren are also great. Singing Syren’s voice sounds beautiful – this is a fantastic idea that was used great. Fight scenes – although unreal and sometimes absurd – have a Witcher spirit somewhere. Aquarius is quite successful, interracial conflict even makes sense and if I did not decide to reach for the story, I would almost be fooled.

In short: if you read “some dedication” quite clearly in mind, “sirens from the depths” will probably only lead you to frustration. The less you remember the story, the easier you will entrust the presented story. And if you have never read a little dedication and reach for a book with this fragment after the screening, you will be very surprised how many deep changes could be made and continue to pretend that we are dealing with this story. This netflix version of its version is still only a fake. Unfortunately.
