A floral offering and theatre served this Saturday to remember Federico Garcia Lorca in it 88th anniversary of his assassinationan event in the Alfacar park (Granada) that bears his name and which has also served to remember the other victims of the Civil War.

The monolith next to an olive tree that presides over the García Lorca Park in Granada has marked the start of the tribute to the author of Yerma, a remembrance of the writer on the 88th anniversary of his execution that extends to the rest of those who were repressed.

The floral offering has once again marked the start of the event organised by the Granada Provincial Council and which this year has included the play ‘Federico, in the raw‘ by José Moreno Arenas, a free representation of the Karma company.

The tribute has brought together representatives of the municipalities of Lorca and memorial associations. “On that already distant night of August 17th “88 years ago, in the midst of deep darkness, in these same wild landscapes of rockrose and thyme, cruelty was personified in events that should never have occurred,” recalled the President of the Provincial Council, Francis Rodríguez (PP).

In his speech, Rodríguez stressed that García Lorca personifies the tribute and recognition “to all those who, at that time, were murdered.” He stressed Lorca’s legacy and added that the Provincial Council works and will continue to do so for the memory of the poet and for the Lorca legacy “which is universal heritage“without erasing an iota of what happened here.”

“We will continue defending freedom. And we must do it together, without confrontations and sterile polemics. Today is a day to remember, but also to seal new spaces of concord, of dialogue, that allow us to advance in this sense,” proposed the president of the Provincial Council of Granada. He has stressed that Lorca continues “alive in his work” and in the verses of the “brilliance of a literary genius” and has opted to build a better future.learning from the pasttransforming pain into hope.”

The Mayor of Alfacar, Fátima Gómez (PSOE), also spoke at this tribute to all those who suffered repression, highlighting the work carried out by the University of Granada, together with the Regional Government and the central government, in the exhumation of graves in the area.

This work has allowed for the first time to return to their loved ones the remains of the two victims of repression, “who return to their families from where they never had to leave“. He also thanked the memorial associations for their constant work and stressed that this year he is facing it “with a backpack full of hope.” The closing chosen for this year comes in theatrical form with the performance by Karma Teatro of the piece ‘Federico, en carne viva’, by José Moreno Arenas.
