and David O. Russell in 1999 gave the world the sensational military comedy-drama “Three Kings”. The climate of the Gulf War was supposedly passed on to the director of the project, who on the set was supposed to “shout at people” and react violently to attempts at communication. At least that’s what the actor claims, who in an interview with “” briefly summed up what he thinks about Russell himself and this style of work.
George Clooney slams fellow director: “Pathetic f***er”
Last Tuesday, George Clooney and Brad Pitt talked to the editors of “GQ” magazine. The interview concerned what they are still looking for in their work as actors. Pitt mentioned that he takes on projects in which he has the opportunity to work with people who love their work. Clooney recalled the events of 1998. It was then that he worked on the set of David O. Russell’s film and he would not want to repeat such an experience even if he knew that the production would be outstanding:
The older I get, the more I see that the way I value my time has changed. Five months of my life is a lot. I no longer have this attitude that “oh, I’ll make a really good movie like “Three Kings” and let this pathetic f***er like David O. Russell make my life hell, make all of us in the crew hell”. It’s not worth it. And certainly not at the stage of life that I’m at, and only to have a good movie later – Russell summed up.
It’s not the first time he’s talked about what it was like to work with the director. For several months, in the American deserts imitating the Iraqi wastelands, they created a film about soldiers who, wanting to enrich themselves on Saddam Hussein’s treasures, accidentally get entangled in a local conflict. The conflict was not only in the production script, but also on the set. Clooney recalled it shortly after the film’s premiere, calling working with Russell “truly, without a doubt, the worst experience of my life.”
What’s worse, it’s not just Clooney who speaks about the director’s temperament. His experiences are confirmed by other actors who have had the opportunity to appear in Russell’s projects in subsequent years. The creator of “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle” has been a problem for Hollywood for years. Although his films win awards at major film festivals, he himself is facing accusations of sexual harassment (he admitted that he touched the breasts of a 19-year-old because she was “provocative”), and on the set he allegedly uses verbal violence and insults as a method of “working” with actors. A recording from the set of “I Heart Huckabees” is circulating on the web, in which he yelled at one of the actresses, kicked objects on the set and threw whatever he managed to catch at the actors. When Lily Tomlin was displeased with his instructions on how to play her role, he exploded in a torrent of words interwoven with curses:
I worked on this f***ing movie for three f***ing years, not to have some f********* b***h scream at me in front of the whole f********* team when I try to f***ing help you, f***! Act like a f***ing adult! – he screamed.
Such outbursts are said to be standard when working with Russell. Despite his unpopular opinion, the director continues to create new projects and find new actors who want to work with him. In recent years, despite the insults they have heard from the director, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams have worked with him. Russell is reportedly currently working on five more projects. It is not known which of them will see the light of day.
