The legend of American cinema Gena Rowlandswhose career in the Hollywood entertainment industry spanned more than six decades, died Wednesday at the age of 94. Rowlands died at her home in Indian Wells, California, surrounded by her family, confirmed the office of her son’s agent, film director Nick Casavetes, according to the specialist newspaper Variety.
The cause of death of the legendary Hollywood actress, who was nominated for Oscars for ‘A Woman Under the Influence’ (1974) and ‘Gloria’ (1980), both directed by her ex-husband and film director John Cassavetes, who died in 1989, is currently unknown.
Her son, also a director, made public last June that his mother suffered from Alzheimer’s in an interview with Weekly Entertainment in which he reviewed their work together on the set of ‘The Notebook’a film in which Rowland played a woman with Alzheimer’s. The actress played in that film, of which It’s been two decades since its premiere On the big screen, Allie, the older version of the same character played by Rachel McAdams.
“Now, my mother has been living with Alzheimer’s for the last five years. She is in full dementia and everything is very strange… We lived it, she acted it and now it is up to the others“, the director declared.
Cassavetes’ grandmother, actress Lady Rowlands, also suffered from Alzheimer’s and her struggle inspired Gena to play Allie in ‘The Notebook’, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. Known for her collaborations with her late husband, actor and director John Cassavetes, on 10 films, the American actress has been honoured in her more than six-decade career with four Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes.
Her last feature film role was in ‘Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks’ (2014) co-starring Cheyenne Jackson.
