The painter from San Sebastian, Juan Luis Goenaga, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 74, as confirmed through his account on X by the popular leader and son-in-law of the artist, Borja Semper.

Juan Luis Goenaga, my father-in-law and friend, has passed away.
“The total artist, the last bohemian”, an honest and free man, as only true artists know how to be.
A part of our hearts is leaving us, but we are left with his work, his immense memory and his humanistic example.

The family has not yet made a decision about his funeral, although they will probably organise a ceremony at the end of the month in San Sebastian.

Goegana, father of the actress Barbara Goenagawas one of the greatest exponents of Basque expressionism, a self-taught creator who began his artistic career in the late 1960s and who nourished his art from the nature that he has been surrounded by for almost his entire life in his Alkiza’s house (Gipuzkoa).

He held his first exhibition in Paris. in 1971, and the following year he presented the painting series ‘Itzalak’obtaining the Main Prize for Basque Painting, with the painting ‘Zelatun’.

The artist leaves behind a long body of work spanning five decades. In 2017, the Fundación Vital organised a retrospective of Goenaga’s work and published a catalogue of his works.

In 2022, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum recognized the painter’s entire career with the award of the Xabier Sáenz de Gorbea award.

In recent years he has participated in several exhibitions in his hometown, including the one dedicated to him by the Kubo Hall in 2020with which this space located in the Kursaal building resumed its activity after the forced closure due to the Covid pandemic and settled “a debt” with the artist.

He was a shy man of few words, who preferred to express himself through his work. He studied engraving in Barcelona and began to explore sculpture in Paris, until he chose Alkiza as his residence and began his deep communion with the land and its roots.

But he did not only live with the ranges of his vital landscape, he also did so with bright colors, in the same way that he did with figuration and abstraction. photographydeveloped an extensive body of work from 1970 onwards, which he gradually abandoned in favour of painting.

The creative career of Juan Luis Goenaga had been included in different catalogues, but it was not until the end of 2018 that a new one was published. monograph on his workon the work carried out since 1968, which was commissioned by the art historian Mikel Lertxundi Galiana.
