At the end of last week, Telewizja Polska removed Przemysław Babiarz from commenting on the Olympic Games in Paris. The decision was the result of the presenter’s statement on the day of the opening ceremony of the sports competition. After John Lennon’s song “Imagine” resounded on stage, the journalist from Telewizja Polska commented: “A world without heaven, nations, religions and this is the vision of this peace that is supposed to encompass everyone. This is the vision of communism, unfortunately.”
Will Przemysław Babiarz join TV Republika?
A day later, the station issued a statement in which it noted that “mutual understanding, tolerance, reconciliation – these are not only the basic Olympic ideas, they are also the foundation of the standards that guide the new Polish Television”. The National Broadcasting Council also became interested in the matter, and Przemysław Babiarz himself somewhat stepped into the background. On Monday, the Plotek.pl portal unofficially reported on rumors regarding the possible transfer of the presenter from Polish Television to TV Republika.
The Wirtualnemedia.pl service commented on the station’s head. Although he did not receive clear information when asked about the aforementioned reports, Tomasz Sakiewicz sent a biblical notation in response, referring to the 2nd verse in the 14th chapter of the Gospel of St. John. The fragment reads as follows: “In my Father’s house are many mansions.”
Statement by the National Broadcasting Council regarding Przemysław Babiarz
On Monday, the National Broadcasting Council’s website published an official statement regarding the proceedings: “It will clarify whether Polish law has been violated by restricting a journalist’s freedom of speech and expression of opinion, which is expressly guaranteed in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and other acts (Press Law, Broadcasting Act). A letter was sent to the broadcaster requesting urgent sending of broadcast material and presentation of its position on the matter. In connection with this incident, the National Broadcasting Council is receiving complaints,” reads the statement.
