Is it appropriate to wear shorts to work in the heat? “In my day, even for Casual Friday, that wouldn’t have been acceptable”

“I live near several office buildings and when I see people leaving the office in hot weather wearing suits, tights, long pants and sleeves, I feel very sorry for them,” Eliza told us. Many people feel special sympathy for men who often cannot wear shorts to work.

Many employers require employees to come to work dressed appropriately. This is especially true for people who work in financial institutions, offices or prestigious showrooms. Most people understand image issues very well and have no problem with it. However, the problem occurs when the outside temperature generally does not drop below 25 degrees.

“If a guy wears shorts to work, it’s a great insult to the majesty”

Women seem to be in a slightly better situation. Although office etiquette requires wearing thin tights, they can still afford an elegant dress or skirt and bare shoulders (at least to some extent). Men, on the other hand, are trapped. In their case, there is basically no choice. A shirt, long trousers and elegant shoes are mandatory in many companies.

Ola’s partner couldn’t count on turning a blind eye when it came to clothing. – My husband, even though he didn’t work with a client or hold any representative position, had to dress elegantly. Years ago, when it was hot, he went out in shorts. It ended up that I had to bring him long pants because the bosses didn’t look kind of way… – she revealed. She also mentioned her friend who outsmarted the system. – My friend found a way to get around this problem. It required some scheming on his part, because every Monday he would bring a change of washed and ironed clothes to work that were in line with the dress code, and he would go to work in normal, everyday clothes. At least he didn’t torture himself in the heat.

I live near several office buildings and when I see people leaving their offices in hot weather wearing suits, tights, long pants and sleeves, I feel very sorry for them. I think that if formal attire is not absolutely necessary, everyone should be able to dress however they want, especially when the weather makes it reasonable.

– Eliza stated. – I sincerely sympathize with men in this matter. A woman will put on a dress (short, airy) and it will be ok. In my opinion, there are so many short men’s trousers nowadays, and in elegant versions at that, that I personally have no problem with him wearing them to the office – added Monika. Agnieszka has a similar opinion, although she expressed it a bit more bluntly:

– When women wear short skirts or strapless blouses, people rarely look askance. But when a man wears shorts to work, it’s a huge insult to the majesty. When it’s hot, why should they brag? It may not look very elegant, but what other option do they have? Let them wear whatever they want.

“In my day, even on Casual Friday, this wouldn’t have been allowed”

Radek has a completely opposite approach. He has worked in a corporation for a long time and has become immersed in the culture that prevails in open space. He believes that if an employer imposes a certain way of dressing, you should grit your teeth and follow it. – Even before the pandemic, it was unthinkable to come to the office without a suit. When I look at how the so-called juniors dress now, I rub my eyes in amazement.

Recently, there was an employee in the office wearing shorts that reached mid-thigh. He wasn’t going to see a client, but I know that he was pointed out in the corridors. In my day, even on Casual Friday, that wouldn’t have been allowed.

– he said. And you, what do you think about this? If you’d like, please vote in our poll below.
