Concerts all over the world are very popular and attract crowds of fans. Some of them count on the fact that even without a ticket, they will be able to listen to their favorite singer thanks to the appropriate sound system in the stadium. Munich was no exception. The city authorities knew what was coming and prepared not only for “legal” listeners with tickets.
Taylor Swift’s Munich concert attracted almost 40,000 ticketless people
Over 70,000 people entered the Munich Olympic stadium. They had all bought tickets well in advance for a lot of money – prices for Taylor Swift’s weekend performance started at 200 euros. However, due to the characteristic, partially open structure of the stadium, an exceptionally large number of people decided to take a walk to the Olympic Park that evening. The strollers were largely counting on being able to listen to the concert for free, in a quality that was only slightly worse than in the sports facility. They had no chance to see the singer herself on stage, but judging by the fan videos on TikTok, Swift’s Munich concerts were still incredibly popular. What’s more, thanks to the lack of a roof, those strollers who had taken their seats on the hill near the stadium well in advance could see practically the entire interior, thanks to which they participated in the concert to an equal extent. Taylor herself noticed this too, and at one point during the performance she also thanked the audience gathered nearby. The videos that can be found on Twitter can be summed up well in one word: Olympiaberg has turned into a human mountain.
The city authorities estimate that around 50,000 people listened to Taylor Swift’s free concert in the park adjacent to the stadium over the course of two days. The crowd began taking their seats on Saturday, a few hours before the singer’s first concert. Munich was prepared and did not discourage the “illegal” listeners – they set up public toilets and made sure that people waiting in the sun had access to water.
Taylor-gating at Taylor Swift concerts
Taylor Swift, who has been on tour for over a year, attracts crowds to her concerts in every corner of the Earth. Fans follow her not only to stadiums. The singer’s concerts are so popular that practically every one of her performances also gathers those who, despite the lack of tickets, also want to hear her. The phenomenon has been given its own name among “Swifties” (Taylor fans) – the so-called “Taylor-gating”, i.e. gathering in front of the place where Swift is currently performing to listen to her for free. Not every stadium is suitable for so-called Taylor-gating, and not all cities are as lenient as Munich. Amsterdam and Melbourne warned against gathering in the parking lots and streets around the stadium during Taylor’s concert, which has been the case since Swift’s first concert in the United States last year.
Taylor-gating is incredibly popular, and not just because it’s “free” to attend. Once sales started, it was hard to buy tickets without a lot of money or a lot of luck to enjoy the full experience the singer had prepared for her fans.
Will Taylor-gating also take place in Warsaw? It is possible that during the three days of Swift’s performances in the Polish capital, the boulevards along the Vistula will be particularly crowded (the sound from the stadium can be heard there very well), as well as on the beach on the right side of the river and in the huge parking lot by the venue itself. Taylor Swift will play in Warsaw on August 1, 2, and 3.
