Malo or margarine? Now we know what to spread on sandwiches to make them healthier

This dispute has been going on for years and still isn’t dying down. It turns out, however, that scientists have found the answer to this long-asked question. Little or margarine? What is better for our body?

The age-old debate over whether to spread butter or margarine on bread is probably coming to an end. According to a study published in July this year in the industry journal Nature Medicine, we can measure changes in blood fat levels that occur in our bodies as a result of our diet. The study was conducted by scientists from the Swedish Chalmers University of Technology, the German Institute for Human Nutrition in Germany and several other universities. It proves that switching from saturated animal fats (which include butter) to unsaturated plant fats (such as good quality margarine) can have a positive effect on the composition of blood fat.

Butter or margarine? There are the latest studies

A study by foreign scientists indicates that it is more beneficial for health to consume unsaturated vegetable fats. Quoted by foreign media, Clemens Wittenbecher, author of the study and head of research projects at Chalmers University of Technology, believes that the results of the study can serve as dietary advice for people for whom a change in diet would be associated with the greatest health benefits.

“The certainty of these guidelines is moderate, however, due to the limitations of existing studies,” we read in “Poradnik Zdrowie.” However, the latest study used a very detailed analysis of blood fat content, called lipidomics. This exceptionally precise measurement allowed scientists to link the type of diet used to diseases. A combination of different types of studies was used here.

This choice can protect you from diabetes

The idea was to establish the so-called multi-lipid score MLS. The researchers confirmed that consuming more unsaturated plant fats while consuming less saturated animal fats can help achieve a positive MLS.

“The study also looked at whether people with low levels of the polylipid score could benefit from changing their diet. According to the researchers, the diabetes prevention was indeed most evident in people with low levels of the polylipid score at the start of the study.” – reports “Poradnik Zdrowie”. The answer to whether we should choose butter or good quality margarine more often now seems a bit clearer.
