The main character Rafał is a child prodigy, growing up in difficult times, when talking about scientific theories and heliocentrism could cost one’s life. He lives in the kingdom of P. and on behalf of the church of C. he is in danger. And no, contrary to appearances he is neither in Poland nor is he Nicolaus Copernicus, but we are very close. Discover the manga “Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite” by Uoto, who – probably fascinated by the history of medieval Europe – created a comic about Rafał and his master, Hubert, inquisitor Novak, bishop Antoni, Potocki, Okgi, Badeni, Jolanta… It seems almost like Poland, but it is more like this invented kingdom of P., inspired by medieval Poland. The manga will soon be interpreted as a series, because an anime based on it will premiere in October.
Film adaptation of the manga about “Copernicus”
Japanese readers point out that Rafał, who will try to combine theological threads with scientific ones, does not live in the times of Copernicus at all, but precedes him and is in a different universe than the Earth we inhabit. He is also the main character for only a small part of the entire story. One day he comes across a man who asks to be called Hubert. The man suggests that he consider the theory according to which the Earth rotates on its own axis and around the Sun. Rafał ponders this issue, creates drawings and comes to similar conclusions – as our very real and Polish Copernicus. However, he gets into trouble when his notes fall into the hands of the merciless inquisitor Novak.
Hubert takes the blame upon himself during interrogation by the investigator and dies, having previously told Rafał where he would find his hidden research. Despite the risk, the young man decides to continue his deliberations and follow the path of heresy.
The mangaka, who goes by the pseudonym Uoto, received the Mandoo Kobayashi Manga Grand Prix 2021 distinction for his comic about Rafał and his successors fighting against the persecution of the C. religion. His manga was included several times in various lists of the most important Japanese comics of 2021 and 2022.
Fans of Uoto’s work around the world have been waiting for the film adaptation of the comic book. Last Thursday, the first trailer for the production by Madhouse studio was published, which will hit small screens in October of this year. In the meantime, you can read the manga in English, as it is available in a digital version.
