I’m Ewelina, I’m 32 years old and I have a lovely German Shepherd named Misiek. Since my student days I’ve been renting an apartment with a friend, but she met a guy and is starting a family with him. And I have to rent a studio apartment because I can’t afford my own cottage. And that’s where the trouble started. Although I had a good two months to find an apartment, it turned out to be too short a time. Money isn’t even a problem here, because I have a good job and I’m able to cope with the current (sick) situation on the housing market.
No one wants to rent her an apartment because she has a dog. “They thank her for her interest and cut off contact”
As soon as the owners find out that I have a big dog, they thank me for my interest and cut off contact. It doesn’t matter that German Shepherds are the sweetest and most family-friendly dogs. It doesn’t matter that my Misiek is exceptionally docile and calm. Besides, he’s not a puppy anymore, so it’s not like he’ll bite, scratch or pee on anything. I always explain this during conversations. But people aren’t interested in that.
“It’s not some kind of monitor lizard or some poisonous exotic spider. It’s a shepherd dog”
Apart from the fact that we don’t have such situations, but even if we did, well, that’s what the deposit is for, right? If any damages occur on my part, I’m financially responsible for it. Obviously, the dog won’t pay for itself, so I’ll do it. So what’s the problem? Meanwhile, every time I talk, I hear the best excuses in the world:
- “Dogs howl and bark, and then the neighbors complain” (I work remotely, so Misiek is calm too).
- “The apartment is freshly renovated” (because people don’t dirty or use up things, you know).
- “You can bring a dog, but only up to 6 kg” (I wonder if they weighed each dog to check if it didn’t weigh 6.1).

What do people have against these poor dogs? Why do they so much not want to rent apartments to decent people just because they have a pet? It’s not some, I don’t know, lizard or poisonous exotic spider that some people have an aversion to. It’s a shepherd dog… Because of this, I had to extend the lease in my current apartment, which is too big for me and in the long run I won’t be able to pay for it. Are dogs really that problematic for landlords? Help!
What do you think about renting to someone with a dog or other animal? Do you understand the landlords’ side, or are you more supportive of the tenants? If you’d like, please vote in our poll below.
