Expect nothing and get everything. “Deadpool & Wolverine” – [RECENZJA BEZ SPOILERÓW]

Attention, it’s finally here: entertaining summer cinema in its purest form. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the quintessence of absurdity, where the plot is third-rate and the only thing that matters is the theater of the two title characters.

I’m not a Marvel psycho, I read comics from this universe selectively (if at all), but I’ve been watching with pleasure what’s in the cinemas for years. The third installment of the adventures of the naughty Deadpool has everything you could expect from this type of film. It’s exceptionally absurd, the plot doesn’t matter much, and the Deadpool and Wolverine duo are the most beautiful duo in the world (and certainly the most beautiful duo this year). Not everything in this production “works”, but that’s not important, because every viewer will probably leave the cinema amused to tears.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” takes no prisoners

The comics and previous films have proven that Deadpool takes no prisoners and is able to joke about absolutely anything. Nothing is sacred to him, but there was a real risk that Disney, very careful and sensitive to criticism, would file down the claws of the rebellious antihero. This kind of censorship would kill the entire character and cast a shadow over subsequent productions from the Marvel universe.

Fortunately, Kevin Feige, responsible for the development of the brand, was given a clear free hand, thanks to which, together with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, he created a bizarre gem consisting of blood and guts decorated with fantastic one-liners. The fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool delights in mocking everything – from Fox (Marvel’s previous owner) and Disney (the current boss), to politics, sex, violence, the LGBT+ community and even car brands. And although it is again the same Deadpool we know from previous parts, he is himself with a charming freshness, because at his side is the grumpy and serious Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Together they create a duo perfectly matched by the principle of opposites attracting, wonderfully aware of what viewers expect from them and not pretending or aspiring to something more. This is the essence of “entertainment”, paraphrasing popular memes from years ago. It’s a joke-fest aimed at world-weary millennials, but fortunately the focus isn’t just on the most orthodox fans. You don’t have to be a Marvel expert to have a great time at “Deadpool & Wolverine,” as evidenced by the audience howling with laughter at the preview.

The recipe for a good time in this film is very simple – don’t expect anything, don’t even watch the trailers, and you’ll be surprised by everything. This is the third film in the series, so you know how it will look and yes, it won’t be any more subtle than in the previous “Deadpools”. What’s more, there’s the wonderful Wolverine, thanks to whom Deadpool suddenly gains a completely new space to express himself. Hugh Jackman didn’t treat this job like a stepmother. He gave it his all, and probably even more – he’s perfectly aware of what some of the audience wants to see (that chest!!), and what others want (that palpable depth of suffering!). The combination of these ingredients and dozens of references to all the X-men films and Wolverine himself resulted in This Wolverine, who is now – let’s not be afraid of this word – an equal partner to Deadpool.

If previous Deadpools were still about something, here we have a festival of gags and a galaxy of dozens of cameos, aimed at pleasing the hearts of fans. Of course, there is also a plot here, there are even two main opponents (including Emma Corrin, whom Cassandra Nova played beautifully). But its details, even the most serious ones, related to the destruction of the world, are of no great importance. They are just pretexts for another exchange of words-blows between Deadpool and Wolverine. There are moments when you can notice it and it grates a bit, but… they are few, after a while the gentlemen jump back onto the tracks of pure entertainment and brawl.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is not high cinema. It never aspired to be high cinema. Reynolds and Jackman know that, everyone on set knows that, and I hope you, the viewers, know that too. And there’s a certain beauty to that, because no one here is pretending to be anyone, and everyone, even the smaller roles, is having a great time.

It’s not the best film in the series, but it’s not disappointing either. It’s very enjoyable and doesn’t require the viewer to have a perfect knowledge of everything that’s happened in the Marvel universe in recent years (e.g. watching all of the dozen or so series). It’s definitely not a film for children, although it’s an “adaptation of a comic book”. It’s also definitely not a production in which you can find depth, which was sometimes attempted in other “Marvels”. Here, they pretended for a moment that there was depth in Deadpool’s motivations, but the hero himself later crushes this idea with a roller of irony. It’s hard for Deadpool to play with his face covered by a mask, so he’s left with a sharp edge of words, and he uses this weapon masterfully and on steroids. He kept us waiting for him in the cinema for almost six years, but he returned to it in beautiful style.
