In cities, the problem with parking spaces is significant, which is why many drivers leave their cars on green areas. Is parking on the lawn allowed? It turns out that the regulations on this matter are not clear.

According to data from the Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers from December 31, 2023, there were 27 million 347 thousand registered cars in Poland. The number of cars is still growing, and there is a shortage of parking spaces in cities. For this reason, drivers park “wherever they can,” including on lawns. What are the consequences for such behavior?

Parking on lawns is slowly becoming the norm. City authorities are encouraging drivers to switch to bikes or scooters, but the problem is still quite big. However, it is worth remembering that green areas are not the best place to leave a car.

However, in Polish law there is no clear regulation prohibiting parking in green areas, but such behavior may be punished under Article 144 of the Code of Petty Offenses. The provision concerns damaging or destroying vegetation on land designated for public use. According to this provision, a driver who parks a car on the lawn can receive a fine of up to PLN 1,000. However, there is a catch.

Parking Ticket on Lawn? One Condition Must Be Met

Klaudia Jachira, Paulina Matysiak and Franciszek Sterczewski drew attention to the legal loopholes in this matter, because In order for the driver to be punished, it must be proven that the lawn, bushes or trees were damaged. This is not always the case, and cars parked on lawns can be a nuisance. MPs submitted a parliamentary interpellation to the Ministry of Infrastructure. Undersecretary of State in the ministry, Piotr Malepszak, responded that parking vehicles on lawns may be added to Article 144 of the Code of Petty Offences as destruction of green areas, and in connection with this, enforcing penalties or imposing blocks will be easier.
