Throughout his career, Jerzy Stuhr has fulfilled himself not only on the stage and on the screen, but also by lending his voice to characters in iconic animations and fairy tales. It was he who spoke the voice of Donkey from “Shrek”, although few realize that he was not the first candidate for this role.

It debuted on the big screens for the first time in 2001 and quickly won the hearts of viewers, thus giving rise to a hit series. Since then, three more full-length films have been made about the adventures of the green ogre and his faithful companion Donkey, and recently the media has been informed that another installment is also planned, the premiere of which was initially announced for 2026.

The undoubted success and popularity of “Shrek” was determined by its gripping plot, full of funny plots and events, but also by the high level of animation. For the Polish part of the fans, the translation of the script, which was the responsibility of Bartosz Wierzbięta, was also of great importance. However, the greatest credit goes to the actors dubbing the main characters.

As we know, Shrek was voiced by Zbigniew Zamachowski, Donkey was created by , and Fiona was played by Agnieszka Kunikowska. The other characters, Lord Farquaad and the Mirror, were played by and Zbigniew Szuszyński, respectively. Few people know, however, that this was not the first cast considered by the producers.

Only a few people realize that before the animation officially went into distribution, a VHS tape with a trailer announcing the premiere appeared on the market. Its recording is even available on YouTube, although the quality is not the best, after all it is quite old.
