– I don’t like adopting animals – said Prof. Jerzy Bralczyk in the program “100 Questions to” on TVP Info. – However, what is human is human. I am an old man and I prefer these traditional formulas and ways of thinking. Even saying that even the most beloved dog has died will be alien to me. No, the dog unfortunately died – he added. With his words, he caused a storm and a necessary discussion on the Internet about language.
The discussion is ongoing after Professor Bralczyk’s words. The position was taken by a well-known veterinarian
. Social sensitivity and awareness are changing, as is language, which evolves and adapts to its times. Veterinarians who devote their time to saving the lives of animals and observe the suffering of their caregivers every day when they have to say goodbye to a pet or when treatment is painful for the quadruped do not hide their indignation at Bralczyk’s words.
Dr. Wojciech Borawski posted his appeal to Professor Bralczyk on the fanpage Diagnostyka Obrazowa Zwierząt Egzotycznych. “Since we are talking about theory, maybe you, Professor, will dare to do some practice. I would like to invite you, Professor, to the clinic, where people hear every day how sick their animal is and what a difficult path it will have to go through, often not even to recover, but to live in good health for the next few months. I invite you to look into the eyes of an animal that is entering the office for the last time after a serious illness, and listen to the conversation with the caregivers who are just finishing the fight for the life of their friend,” the doctor writes under the photo with the adorable dog.
“Words have great power”
“With these words, you have offended the caregivers, the animal (although this is less important to you, Professor, because it denies it the dignity of dying), but also me. Why me? Because there is also something that you will never feel. You will never feel what I feel when this patient I know (I hope that’s how I feel, according to the Professor) says goodbye to me with tired eyes, and the caregivers leave the office so alone,” adds Borawski. The veterinarian also emphasizes that Professor Bralczyk’s opinion also undermines many years of his hard training. According to the doctor, depriving an animal of an empathetic way of saying goodbye also undermines its right to life.
“It’s easy to be a theoretician of language. But you’re a total idiot in practice, Professor, because you used this language in such a way that it offended millions of people and animals around the world. And who, if not you, should know how powerful words are,” the veterinarian concludes.
