Are you withdrawing money from an ATM? Beware of a new method used by fraudsters. All it takes is a moment

Fraudsters have started using a new method that allows them to fleece anyone who withdraws cash from an ATM. They don’t use any fancy tricks. All they do is feign honesty. What is their scam?

The new scam that thieves are using looks so inconspicuous and ordinary that it is really easy to fall for it. That is why it is so important to be extra careful when withdrawing money from an ATM. It only takes a moment of inattention to lose all your savings.

A new scam will rob you of your savings. Thieves pretend to help

Unfortunately, in recent years, fraudsters have been showing increasing creativity and ingenuity in coming up with new methods to rob others. Sophistication and ruthless appeal to the feelings of victims through the “grandchild” method or pretending to be a loved one who has had an accident and needs money immediately, mean that many people are taken in. Meanwhile, it literally takes a moment to lose your life savings. This time, under the guise of wanting to help, they are increasingly robbing victims who use ATMs. And it’s not about taking the money they have withdrawn.

Thieves pretend to help. In the meantime, they steal cards

The new way is really simple and it’s not about taking out the money that someone withdraws. When the victim uses an ATM and gets to the point where he or she has to retrieve their card, a “concerned” thief approaches and says that he or she has just seen money, usually a banknote, fall out. Of course, he offers to help find them. At the moment when a person, worried about the possibility of losing something, bends down, the fraudster quickly takes his card out of the ATM and swaps it for another or a fake one. It all takes a split second. Few people pay special attention to the card, which is then hidden in the wallet after using the ATM. Most of us probably count the cash and check if everything works. In the meantime, the thief walks away with our form, which he then uses to make purchases.

How to protect yourself from the new scam? First of all: vigilance

To protect yourself from this type of fraud, there is only one way out. Don’t get distracted and don’t let anyone approach you while using an ATM. Apart from the fraud itself, thieves can use this method to find out your PIN. That’s why it’s so important to keep a certain distance. However, if this happens, don’t take your payment card out of your sight. Thank them for their help, but start looking only when both the card and the withdrawn cash are in your wallet. For greater security, use machines placed in bank branches, because there is less risk of being robbed.
