Brodka as the Warsaw mermaid sings the song Santor. “First I cried, then I got goosebumps”

Monika Brodka has proven once again that she is capable of interpreting classic Polish songs with exceptional sensitivity. Her performance of the song “Spotkanie z Warszawą” from Irena Santor’s repertoire simply enchanted the listeners, who did not hide their appreciation. “I have chills”, “Majstersztyk”, “Ale¿ to jest zacne”, “Piêkne to było³o” – they write under the video clip, which Brodka directed herself.

Although the black-and-white music video for “Spotkanie z Warszawą” is very simple in form, the combination of Brodka’s vocals, emphasized by a subtle musical arrangement, and shots of the night panorama of the capital, together with archival shots from the Warsaw Uprising, create a moving whole. This is undoubtedly due not only to the vocalist’s artistic sensitivity, but also to the moving text written over half a century ago by the poet Tadeusz Kubiak.

Brodka covered Irena Santor’s song. “Almost like Niemen”

“The first time I heard it I cried, the second time I got goosebumps”, “Good. You managed to capture the pre-war style and atmosphere”, “A masterpiece! Simply wonderful. The image and music penetrate the depths of the heart and move me. Thank you”, “Thank you, beautiful! The music video, the idea – goosebumps!” – satisfied listeners praise Brodka’s composition and clip.

Some of them emphasize that the whole thing makes a similar impression on them as the iconic song by Czesław Niemen: “Beautiful. Almost like Niemen and ‘Sen o Warszawie’. You can easily make a comparison in terms of emotions, affect towards our beloved Warsaw. Although Monika is from far away, she has a mermaid throne”, “I think that many people can sign under this song, under its lyrics… Warsaw dream”, “Hey, cool, really. You can clearly hear the Warsaw atmosphere in the melody” – write enchanted fans under the video. Some of them even dream of a duet and

More people emphasize how successful this project was in terms of art: “It was beautiful. So old-fashioned, so original today”, “No one will remain indifferent to such a siren song”, “A beautiful song. Brodka interpreted this piece better than Irena Santor. Something wonderful”, “Beautiful intonation and style in the convention of old Polish vocalists. Congratulations”, “How admirable”, “It’s been a long time since I listened to a Polish song so pleasantly, and I know the original”.

There were also a few comments under the video clip about how, with the help of this song and video clip, Brodka “disenchanted” patriotism from nationalist accretions for listeners: “Something wonderful. Warsaw and Brodka in this armor! It’s wonderful to show attachment to our history in this way, without flares, violence and hatred. Pure beauty. Thank you Monika”, “I want to love Poland and everything Polish. I like and need it. And it’s not nationalism”, “It’s like a manifesto that can be a cry that the history of 85 years ago may repeat itself soon. It touches the heart and shows what is really important and how we can exist in the new reality” – they analyze under the clip. And this means that the creators managed to achieve something important.

Brodka herself says about the song:

‘Spotkanie z Warszawą’ by Irena Santor is the opening track of the album ‘WAWA’. It is an element of hope, rays of sunshine that appear over the city – illuminating it, thereby arousing delight in people who live in Warsaw.

The album features 10 songs: some of them are covers, and the rest are new and original compositions dedicated to the capital. The whole thing was created in cooperation with the Warsaw Uprising Museum on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of such important events in the history of the city and the country during World War II.

Brodka with a concert on the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising

– The album “WAWA” tells the story of Warsaw – a city that is extremely important to me. I present history from the perspective of an individual in a large metropolitan area, but I am also interested in the energy circulating between artists who were inspired by it. With all the difficult history and the greyness that it brings – emphasizes Brodka. The album will be released in its entirety on July 26, 2024, and on the same day, a concert will be held in the Freedom Park on the premises of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, where the artist and her guests will present new material to the audience (the event will be broadcast on the Museum’s social media on the same day at 9:00 p.m., as well as on TVN24).

– Today, when it seems that almost everything has been said about the Uprising, Brodka reaches for the key that opens the door to a place that leaves disputes far behind us. With sounds, she reaches for the essence of humanity – emotions. What is Brodka’s Warsaw like? Beautiful in an unconventional way. With all its chaos, greyness, tremors, history, dirt and pure moments when the city comes to life – analyzes the project Jan Ołdakowski, Director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
