Why did Ida Nowakowska not want to admit that her father was an outstanding writer?

Ida Nowakowska hid her father’s identity for years. It turns out that it was the esteemed writer Marek Nowakowski. Why didn’t the daughter want to admit to her famous parent?

Ida Nowakowska is a popular face of Polish television, known for programs such as “You Can Dance” and “Pytanie na śniadanie”. However, for a long time she avoided talking about her origins. Only years later did it come to light that she was the daughter of Marek Nowakowski, one of the most outstanding contemporary Polish writers.

Who was Marek Nowakowski?

Marek Nowakowski is a figure who needs no introduction to literature lovers. Over nearly five decades of creativity, he has published dozens of short stories, novels, and dramatic works. His work focused on a realistic description of life in the Polish People’s Republic.with particular emphasis on the Warsaw street and small-town environments. Nowakowski not only observed reality, but also actively participated in it. In the 1980s, he took part in protests against the communist authorities, collaborated with the Parisian “Kultura” and was a co-founder of the underground magazine “Zapis”.

Why did Ida Nowakowska hide who her father was?

The reason why Ida Nowakowska did not speak publicly about her father for years may come as a surprise. It turns out that the presenter did not feel worthyto represent the intellectual legacy of her father. In the program with Kuba Wojewódzki she said “

I don’t think I’m at the intellectual level where I should brag about it. I don’t think I represent my dad in the best intellectual light yet. My dad was the smartest man I’ve ever met.

A complicated family history

Ida Nowakowska’s family history is quite complicated. The presenter was born out of wedlock Marek Nowakowski with the painter Joanna Maria Żamojdo, two decades younger than the writer. Despite the birth of a daughter, the couple never formalized their relationship, and Nowakowski remained married to Jolanta Nowakowska.

This situation, as well as the fact that Ida lived in the United States for some time, affected her relationship with her father. Despite this, the presenter always appreciated her father and was grateful for everything he did for her.

Marek Nowakowski died in 2014, which was a huge blow to Ida. “When Dad died, it was the end of the world for me (…). Everything collapsed for me then” – she recalled in one of the interviews.

Despite the passing of the years, Ida often thinks back to her father. On her Instagram, she shared touching memories: “They were ordinary days, but now I know how special they were, how important. Dad almost always picked me up from school. I loved it when he took me to the Library at the House of Literature.”

The memory of Marek Nowakowski is still alive not only in the heart of his daughter. On the 10th anniversary of the writer’s death, President Andrzej Duda honored his memorylaying flowers on his grave at the Powązki Military Cemetery.
