Things characteristic of the PRL era are still stored in many Polish homes. They lie in the attic or at the bottom of a drawer that no one looks into. One of the valuable relics, whose value is still not small, is an old financial instrument, the PKO housing book.
Things from the PRL are a real treasure today. How much is a PKO housing book worth?
The housing book was a tool that allowed saving for a flat. It was a confirmation of the amount of funds accumulated in a savings account in two types:
- real savings collected by the holder,
- guarantee premium.
In the times of the Polish People’s Republic it enjoyed considerable interest, especially the one issued by Powszechna Kasa Oszczędności, which was later transformed into PKO BP bank. Unfortunately, the changes in the system in 1989-1990 and the prevailing hyperinflation caused its value dropped dramatically.
How to use the PKO housing book? The right to a guarantee premium provided
Many Poles still have them. Under the Act of November 30, 1995, holders of housing books established before October 23, 1990 were granted a guarantee premium. As reported by pkobp.pl, it is financed from state budget funds.
The owners of these booklets are entitled to a guarantee premium, provided that the funds accumulated in the booklet are used for strictly defined housing purposes.

To use it, please remember to register, which is required from January 19, 2021 year. The application for the liquidation of the housing book from the PRL era, as well as the granting of the bonus, can be submitted at any PKO BP branch. Similarly in the case of or destroyed document.
