Although actor and musician Jack Black openly supports President Joe Biden’s candidacy, he has not been indifferent to the scandal that his bandmate’s words have caused. Kyle Gass joked about the incident during a Tenacious D concert in Sydney just a day after the attack. Worse, he used the moment when he was supposed to say his own birthday wish to do so.
Black suspends his band’s activities
On July 14, Jack Black and Kyle Gass, along with the rest of Tenacius D, performed at the ICC Sydney Theatre, where they also celebrated Gass’s 64th birthday. A cake appeared on stage, and Black and the audience sang “Happy Birthday” to the musician. Then Kyle was supposed to blow out a candle and make a birthday wish. And so he did: “Next time, let them hit Trump,” Gass said into the microphone, as the crowd erupted in laughter.
The incident has sparked outrage among some commentators and viewers who believe the band is trivializing a serious American social issue regarding the availability of guns and the violence associated with them, Variety reports. Jack Black addressed the matter in a separate statement two days after the incident:
I was very unpleasantly surprised by what was said during our concert on Sunday. I would never support hate speech nor encourage political hatred in any form.
After much consideration, I have determined that it would be inappropriate for Tenacious D to continue touring. We are also putting all future creative plans on hold. I am grateful to my fans for their support and understanding.
– Black wrote in a post published on his Instagram profile, among other places. It gained over 200,000 likes in less than two hours, although the ability to comment on the post was blocked.
The main culprit, Kyle Gass, also released a statement in the case. He wrote:
The line I improvised on stage in Sydney on Sunday was highly inappropriate and dangerous. It was a huge mistake. I do not support violence of any kind against anyone or anything. This is a tragedy and I am deeply sorry that I was so reckless. I deeply apologize to those I have let down and deeply regret the pain I have caused.
The attack on Donald Trump took place at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was shot by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Four shots were fired, but the bullets missed their target. One of the bullets only grazed the former president’s right ear. Trump was quickly evacuated by Secret Service agents and was not seriously injured. Unfortunately, one of the rally participants died and two others were injured. Security guards also shot the attacker on the spot.
The statement on this matter was made by the incumbent President Joe Biden. – There is no place in America for this type of violence or any violence. Attempted attacks are against everything we stand for as America. We cannot allow this to happen. Unity is the most important thing. We will not lose sight of the fact that we are Americans – he said in his speech. Biden also announced that Donald Trump will receive the highest level of protection from the government, and the Secret Service is to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
