Wajda gave him the role of a lifetime in his film. “He could play anything.” A day later, there was an accident.

First he conquered the theatre stages, later he also began to appear on the screen. Bogumi³ Kobiela had all the predispositions to become one of the biggest stars of Polish cinema. He collaborated with outstanding directors, creating characters beloved by the audience, but he did not live to see the role that was to be the most important in his career.

was born on May 31, 1931 in Katowice. After completing compulsory education and successfully passing his high school leaving exams, he wanted to start studying economics, but in the end he abandoned this intention to try his hand at the entrance exams to the Krakow theater school. He received an index, landing in a year with such future stars as Kalina Jędrusik, Leszek Herdegen and Zbigniew Cybulski, who became his dear friend, companion on stage, and for some time even his roommate.

What films did Bogumił Kobiela play in? The role in Munk’s comedy was a breakthrough for him

After graduating with distinction, he left for Gdańsk, where, like Cybulski, he was hired at the Wybrzeże Theatre. After moving to the capital, he joined the Ateneum and Komedia theatres, and also played in the Dudek and Wagabunda cabarets. After appearing in the Television Theatre, he began receiving offers of roles in films and series. He made his screen debut in 1953 in “Three Stories”, and in the following years he appeared in such titles as “Szkice kominem”, “Eroica”, “Pożegnania”, “Rysopis znajd w Saragossie” and . – Endowed with a great acting technique, he could play almost anything. Because he also had enormous comic power, he was mechanically cast in comedy roles. Perhaps he suffered most from the fact that the audience demanded less from him than he could give – said Andrzej Wajda about him.

The turning point in Kobiela’s career was undoubtedly the comedy “Zezowate szczęścia” by Andrzej Munk, in which he played the role of Jan Piszczyk. – Piszczyk’s role was written especially for Kobiela. Without him, this film would probably be just a didactic satire on people without their own face – said Tadeusz Sobolewski in the “Film” magazine in 1979. Although critics did not spare him praise and viewers had great sympathy for him, he felt that he still had a lot to offer.

How did Bogumił Kobiela die? After Cybulski’s death, he was terrified of sharing his fate

It is no secret that when he died under the wheels of a train on January 8, 1967, Kobiela completely broke down. He feared that he would share the fate of his friend, which he wrote about in letters to his beloved wife Małgorzata Nowakowska.

I really fear more and more often that something unforeseen, bad, might happen, because we are too good. And I think that nature always equalizes, unfortunately.

Despite this, he returned to his profession, because he still hoped that he would get a chance to create a character that would seal his career. “I play in films quite often, although I haven’t had many important roles, interesting characters. However, I still hope that I will find my role,” he said half-jokingly, half-seriously. He was to fulfill this dream thanks to the film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” On July 1, 1969, the actor met with , to discuss the script for the production. He was excited, after all, he was to appear on the first set for the first time. “He was very keen on my project, he promised that he would look through the plays, look for them. He would be great in the dramatic repertoire,” Wajda recalled.

The next day, however, an accident occurred that put an end to all plans. While traveling with his wife and two hitchhikers, the car driven by Kobiela skidded and collided head-on with a bus on a road in Buszkowo. At first, it seemed that none of the passengers had suffered any major injuries, but after arriving at the hospital for a routine check-up, the actor suddenly lost consciousness. When he was taken to the operating theater, it turned out that he had a ruptured spleen, which led to a hemorrhage. An operation was performed immediately, but he did not wake up from the coma. He died 8 days later at the age of just 38.
