He is undoubtedly one of the most popular actors in the Polish film industry. He made his screen debut in the early 90s, but the real breakthrough in his career came in 2004 thanks to the film “Karol. The Man Who Became Pope” directed by Giacomo Battiato. Although the role brought him enormous popularity, including abroad, and critical acclaim, it soon turned out to be a curse. As he stated in “Rzeczpospolita”, it landed him in the “papal drawer”, from which he was unable to escape for a long time.
He played an SS officer in a TVP series. It didn’t help Adamczyk get rid of the Pope label
When the emotions after the premiere of the film died down, Adamczyk focused on continuing his career and worked hard for his success and position in the industry. Although many saw him only as the Pope, he proved time and again that he had much more to offer as an actor. One of the roles that was supposed to help him get rid of this label was the character of Lars Rainer, a Gestapo officer, in the already cult “Czas honoru” on Polish Television. However, not everyone got used to his new version right away.
He was one of the stars of “Czas honoru”. This is how Adamczyk remembers working on the set of the series
In 2020, Adamczyk gave an extensive interview to the Filmweb portal, in which he talked about his most interesting roles. One of the productions he decided to highlight was the previously mentioned “Czas honoru”. He also shared an anecdote from the set, which made him realize how deeply his image as the pope had become ingrained in the audience’s memory. “I had a scene where I was driving a car. The car broke down, so I was waiting in a gate in Praga in Warsaw, so stressed that in a moment an old man would come out and I would scare him with my leather SS uniform and the skull on my hat,” he said.
At one point, an elderly woman actually emerged from the tenement house opposite, holding nets in both hands. As soon as she saw him, she stopped moving. However, he had not expected such a reaction at all. “She looked at me, let go of the nets, and I was convinced that we would have to call an ambulance right away,” he recalled. “Meanwhile, she opened her arms and said, ‘Jesus Mary, the Holy Father,'” he added with a laugh.
