See in the water? Immediately return to shore. WOPR warns. “That’s where accidents happen”

On hot days, cool water seems exceptionally tempting. Amateurs are attracted not only by the sea and lakes, but also by rivers. Despite numerous warnings, many people still choose unguarded and dangerous places, where tragedy is easy. Now WOPR lifeguards warn with dangerous slants.

Drownings and water accidents are often the result of recklessness, stupidity and alcohol, but it also happens that the lack of awareness of the dangers is to blame. One of them is the riprap that appears on rivers. They are just as dangerous as a rushing current, deep water near the shore or whirlpools. And definitely more treacherous.

What is a river bank? WOPR warns vacationers. It’s better not to risk it

WOPR rescuers from Piaseczno published a post on Facebook in which they warn holidaymakers about dangerous places on the river, and such places are the embankments. Although they look inconspicuous, this is only an appearance, because “it is on them that accidents very often occur”. A embankment is a triangular and moving shallow area in the river current. It is created by sand and gravel carried with the water. It moves with the river current, but sometimes it stays in one place for a long time. The edge of the embankment is set transversely to the current and sometimes protrudes significantly above the water surface. Such shallow areas often tempt those who are not aware of the danger and, for example, swim up to them in a boat or kayak. On one side of the embankment, the water is shallow, but just below it there is deep water, often with a fast current.

If a person walking on the bank finds themselves near the edge, they can very easily suddenly slide off the bank into deep water. This can often be accompanied by shock. […]. You fall into very deep water and the strong current of the river starts to pull the victim downstream.

– warn rescuers from Piaseczno. What to do if we fall off a bank? It is best to try to escape from the main current to the side towards the nearest bank. WOPR advise, however, to simply not enter the bank at all, because it is not worth the risk.

The river bank is not everything. Watch out for other hazards too

However, this is not the only danger that may lurk by the water. If we choose a river, we must remember, among other things, the fast and deep main current. Also dangerous are ploso, “very deep water forming at the shore”, backwaters or whirlpools. – The latter are particularly dangerous at spurs, i.e. rocky hydrotechnical structures perpendicular to the river that regulate the river current – notes Piotr Rytko, president of the Piaseczno WOPR.
