Ezezez: “Our food is the way”

Basque: Leave this field empty: “Walk from our home”

A poker of Basque groups will be in charge of opening the second day of the Bilbao BBK Live festival in Kobetamendi. Immediately after the doors open, the Bilbao duo Silitia will be heard in the venue (17:30 on the Beefeter stage), our rock stars Ezezez (17:35, San Miguel), the electronic pop of STR (18:00, Firestone) and the bright, dreamlike pop of the Pamplona quartet Melenas (18:30, Nagusia).

The second element of this opening quartet on Friday, Ezezezhas been one of the most pleasant surprises of the musical year in Euskal Herria thanks to his album Katuzaldiareleased in late 2023. The album combines punk attitude, melodic will, rock power and, above all, absolute attention to detail (the attentive ear will enjoy all the hidden clues found in the 36 minutes of the album), and this Friday afternoon the group faces the challenge of bringing the atmosphere contained in the album, full of audacity, sweat and intensity, to a big stage.

We spoke with Unai Madariaga, the quartet’s vocalist and guitarist.

You’ve been playing a lot since you released KatuzaldiaHow are you experiencing this sweet moment?

We are having a lot of fun. In the end, live performances are what we enjoy the most, and in half a year we have played more concerts than we thought we would.

The album has taken us to places we never expected to go, but for me the foundation is in the small concerts we have given throughout the tour: youth clubs, self-managed spaces, festivals organised by different groups…

What treasures found during this streak would you like to keep and what, if anything, has been the hardest thing for you during this streak?

For me, the greatest treasure is the path itself, seeing where you started and how far you can go. Our food is the path. In addition, we have made the album in a completely self-managed way: production, recording, design…

The fact that something the four of us have done has had this much success makes us feel proud.

Pop, punk, garage, rock, grunge… In Katuzaldia All of that and more resonates, but how would you define an Ezezez concert?

They are concerts full of energy, and most of the time we manage to connect with the audience. The movement that makes the concert special comes from that relationship.

In the end, each concert is a world of its own, but in all of them there is a desire to have a good time, carefreeness and dancing, a certain hedonistic impudence. Above all, we try to make everyone feel welcome, as we want safe spaces at our concerts.

I remember we once received two feedbacks very different from the same concert: one person told us that he had spent the concert laughing, while the other defined it as something close to an ayahuasca ritual; that is what you can find at one of our concerts.

On the other hand, this also shows that each and every one of us can live the same experience in a very different way, ha ha ha.

I assume you’ve been to Bilbao BBK Live before. What memories do you have of the festival?

These kinds of festivals have both positive and negative aspects, but I will try to be positive so as not to be stubborn.

In the end, you get the chance to see live bands that you like and can’t see anywhere else. Last year, I was working as a riderAnd, to highlight a moment, I would say seeing Idles from the edge of the stage next to the Arctic Monkeys.

Now I think about it and it seems ridiculous; ridiculousin the sense of hard to imagine.

Which other artist on the bill would you not miss for anything in the world?

It seems like a dream to me to share the bill with Albert Plá.

So what now? What are Ezezez’s next steps and plans?

We will record a new album in the summer, and we will see when we will release it. We don’t want to be in a hurry so as not to retire too soon. Katuzaldiabut the new work will probably be published by the beginning of next year.

In autumn and winter, we will be all over Spain with the second part of the tour, visiting Seville, Granada, Catalonia, Galicia and many other places. So yes, we have work ahead of us.
