Are names popular in the PRL era still as popular? Although fashion very often comes full circle, not all names from those years have returned to favor. Statistical data clearly show this. And it’s a pity, because it’s such a beautiful name!

The sentiment for the PRL era has recently returned with a vengeance. Furniture and gadgets from those years are coming back into fashion. Although these were difficult times in Polish history, that aesthetic fascinates young generations and is being revived. Fashion has also come full circle in the matter of names given to children. After the fascination with rare and foreign-sounding names, classic native ones such as Hanna, Zuzanna and Zofia are fashionable again. However, there is a name that, although it was dominant in the PRL, is now encountered less and less often.

In the times of the Polish People’s Republic, parents were happy to choose names such as Krystyna, Maria, Teresa and Elżbieta for their daughters. And what about today? the most popular name for a girl in 2023 was Zofia, as well as Zuzanna. Parents also willingly chose Hanna, Maria and Alicja.

Interestingly, the name Elżbieta, popular in the Polish People’s Republic, was given to only 129 girls last year. Teresa also lost popularity. Only 93 girls were given this name. For comparison, the name Zuzanna was given to as many as 4,800 girls during that time. And what about names for boys?

Andrzej, popular in the Polish People’s Republic, has not returned to favor. Another name takes the podium

The boys in In the Polish People’s Republic, the most common names were Jan, Tadeusz, Józef, Piotr, and Andrzej.. In turn, in the ranking of the most popular male names in 2023, Nikodem, popular years ago, topped the list Jan, however, took third place on the podium – as many as 5,638 boys were given this name. Parents were reluctant to choose the name Andrzej, however, because only 149 boys were named that way. What about Tadeusz, Józef and Piotr? Of these three, Piotr was chosen most often:

  • Joseph – 566,
  • Thaddeus – 861,
  • Peter – 1630.
