Since I found out I was pregnant, I haven’t been abroad, and every holiday in the country I’ve spent with my family. My son is already 5, so I decided it was time for me. I talked to my husband that he would take care of Antoś, and I would take a friend and we would fly together to Greece for a week. We arranged the date, bought trips, ordered new swimsuits, summer dresses and flip-flops. Unfortunately, the package with the order arrived when my mother-in-law was at home.

“Oh, are you going on vacation?” she asked. I replied that I was going away and the boys were staying at home. At that point, my mother-in-law froze. “But how?”. Her face showed all the signs of shock and consternation. “Normally. I haven’t been on vacation by myself for 6 years, so I’m going to Greece with a friend,” I said. She still couldn’t get it. She fell silent, only to launch into a series of questions a moment later: how come, why, why, so alone, aren’t you afraid, and my favorite: “You’ll leave the child alone?!” I answered truthfully that the child had a father, and a very organized one at that, so I wasn’t worried about that at all. “And you’re worried that your son won’t be able to cope?” I blurted out. She died down a bit. The subject was over.

Then I heard through the grapevine that she was spreading the word around the family and the neighborhood that “the uncivilized mother goes to have fun, and the poor husband stays with the child.” On the one hand, my blood boils, on the other, I’ve gotten used to the fact that she has a long tongue. I decided not to worry. My mother-in-law won’t ruin my first vacation in 6 years, there’s no way!

But I still don’t understand what this “leaving a child” thing is about. After all, he has two parents. Each of us is equally important. No one pays attention when the father goes somewhere. And when the mother, the gates open like hell. After all, she can take care of her son, make him food, organize his time. Apart from the fact that Antoś is 5 years old, not 5 months old. He can do many things on his own. People, give these mothers a break! We really sacrifice a lot, we literally shed blood, sweat and tears for years. I think we deserve a few days of rest.
