Violetta Villas is still called a legend of the Polish stage. When she was 16, she married Piotr Gospodarek, a lieutenant of the border troops. After the wedding, they lived in the house of the singer’s parents and had a son, Krzysztof. Their relationship did not last and in 1964 the star moved with her child to Warsaw. It was there that she met the musicologist and music critic Janusz Ekiert.

Janusz Ekiert left his wife for Villas. However, he delayed the decision to divorce

Villas and Ekiert met at the Polish Radio building. She was 26, he was 33. At the time, he was married to the pianist Lidia Grychtołówna, but Violetta made a huge impression on him. He fell in love at first sight.

You couldn’t just look at her and go to sleep peacefully. You had to undress her with your eyes. Guys flocked to her en masse. She chose me.

– Janusz recalled in the book “Villas. I have nothing to hide”. At first, the couple hid their romance. However, they decided to share their happiness with the world and on November 20, 1965, they appeared together at the opening of the rebuilt Teatr Wielki. Grychtołówna was abroad at the time, but she was not too concerned about her husband’s fling. “He’ll play with it and come back home to me,” she was supposed to say. Violetta, on the other hand, hoped that Ekiert would choose her. When she left for Paris to give a concert, she wrote him love letters and assured him of her ardent feelings.
