she was still a child when she discovered that her greatest passion was singing. She started attending individual lessons then, developing her skills, and then she started studying at a music school. At the same time, she also started performing with the Aknif cabaret and the rock band Nieznajomi, acquiring stage skills. It was then, during one of her performances, that she caught the eye of Janusz Kruk from the band Warszawskie Kuranty, who proposed that she work with them.
She was 17, he was 22. It was for her that Janusz Kruk left his family
It is no secret that Kruk was fascinated not only by the 17-year-old’s voice, but also by her extraordinary beauty. When the group broke up shortly afterwards, they were already madly in love. Even his family did not stand in the way of their love, because at that time he had a wife and a daughter, whom he decided to abandon. In 1971, together with Dmoch, he founded a band called and almost immediately began to conquer the stage. They regularly gave concerts and performed on the stages of the largest festivals in Poland, gaining the recognition of listeners and numerous awards. They also promoted many timeless hits such as “Windą do nieba” or “Chodź, pomaluj mój świat”, which, despite the passage of time, are still popular.
Although they triumphed on stage, things were not going well between them privately. From the beginning, Dmoch’s close ones advised her against this relationship, but she did not want to listen. She moved with her beloved in Warsaw’s Sadyba, and in 1973 they stood down the aisle. However, the idyll quickly came to an end. The young vocalist was not exactly the life of the party, and she treated her home as her safe haven, unlike her husband, who constantly invited guests, feasting with them until dawn. The real crisis came in the mid-1980s, when the band’s popularity began to decline, and Kruk, resentful of this fact, sought solace in alcohol. “For Kruk, any excuse was good to run away with a bottle into the city, and if it were not for Elżbieta’s persistence, he would not have composed even half of what was left of him,” recalled Marek Dutkiewicz.
Dmoch knew about Kruk’s betrayals. In the end, history has come full circle
She was aware that her husband was not keeping up with her, but as long as he returned to their shared nest, she turned a blind eye to his antics, explaining that this was the price she had to pay for living with the artist. “This relationship was flawed from the start,” said a friend of the couple, adding that their problems were a consequence of the breakup of the musician’s first family. “And they had to pay for it,” he emphasized. And so it happened, because history came full circle when he left Dmoch for another woman. The divorce was a real blow to her, but despite this, she wanted to keep in touch with him at all costs. They still performed together, and although their acquaintance was limited to work on his part, she cherished the hope that they would be together again someday. She did not abandon this conviction, even when he remarried and had sons. “He was her only love, the only person in her life,” said her friend.
What’s happening with Elzbieta Dmoch now? The singer lived on the edge of poverty for a long time
Everything changed when Kruk suffered a massive heart attack in 1992, which resulted in his death. This completely broke her. She fell into depression and withdrew from public life. “Her world was the stage, dressing room, interviews, television. When Kruk died, everything collapsed,” said Wacław Laskowski, former drummer of 2 plus 1, in Onet. Despite assurances that she would end her career, Dmoch returned to the stage six years later, reactivating the band. She began to perform regularly and it seemed that everything was going well. However, after four years, she unexpectedly stepped back into the shadows. “I will never go back to singing. It’s a closed chapter. I lost my love for music and it’s none of people’s business,” she said in an interview.
At first, she lived off her savings, but they quickly ran out. When she lost her roof over her head, she moved to a small house in the countryside. Although she lived without access to electricity and running water, she refused to accept any help offered. Some time later, due to her mother’s age and health, she moved in with her in Warsaw. After her mother’s death, she broke down and began treatment. She is currently under the care of the Polish Music Foundation, which supports her financially.
