Sandra Drzymalska played Simona Kossak. “With animals it’s a completely different game” [TYLKO U NAS]

In the Białowieża forester’s lodge or its surroundings with Simona Kossak and Lech Wilczek during 35 years there were: a raven, a sow, a fox, elks, badgers, a lynx and many other animals. – When we finished shooting with the deer, I was very sad, I got incredibly close to them – says Sandra Drzymalska, who played the naturalist. In an interview with Gazeta.pl the actress also talks about what it was like to work with Jakub Gierszał and who she thinks the film “Simona Kossak” is for.

– It is a film that also devotes a lot of attention to animals, nature, forests that we, humans, are destroying – says Drzymalska. – I would like Simona to be perceived as a pioneer who approached animals and nature with great tenderness, emotionality, sincerity and honesty – adds the actress. On set as Simona Kossak she worked with many animals. What was it like?

It’s a completely different game. You forget about yourself because all the focus is on the animals, but it’s also incredibly moving that at some point the animals give you access to themselves, and in some way they become an integral part of you. I remember that when we finished the stage of shooting with the deer, I was very sad, I had become incredibly attached to them.

Who was Simona Kossak?

Simona Kossak, daughter of the painter Jerzy Kossak and granddaughter of Wojciech, deprived of the talent that had defined her family for generations, grew up without the warmth of a despotic mother. When, after her studies, she left everything – home, tradition, social conventions – and took up a position as a scientist in Białowieża, she began life on her own terms.

She sometimes called herself a zoopsychologist. She settled in the middle of the forest, in a house without electricity or running water, surrounded by wild nature. There she met photographer Lech Wilczek, with whom she shared passions – love of nature and… the need for freedom. In the Dziedzinka forester’s lodge.

The film is directed by Adrian Panek, who also wrote the screenplay. The producers of “Simona Kossak” are Magdalena Kamińska and Agata Szymańska. In addition to Drzymalska and Gierszał, the cast includes Agata Kulesza, Borys Szyc, Olga Bołądź, Dariusz Chojnacki and Marta Stalmierska. The premiere of the production is scheduled for November 15.
