The director’s body was found near a house on the outskirts of the Canadian city of Quebec. His business partner Nathan Ross wrote in a statement for:

He was a friend to me, a creative partner and a big brother. We will miss our maestro very much, and we experience his loss with great pain. But it is comforting to know that his beautiful style and influential productions that he left behind will still be with us.

Ross also emphasizes that the deceased artist was “a true artist, a generous and loving man.”

Jean-Marc Vallée was born on March 9, 1963. He studied film at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where he was directing, editing and scriptwriting. He started out with short films and music videos before moving on to full-length. His 1995 debut “Black List” was nominated for nine Genie Awards. Critics appreciated his subsequent productions, the film “CRAZY” was highly appreciated, and “Young Victoria”, starring Emily Blunt as the British Queen Victoria, received three Oscar nominations.

The real breakthrough in his American career, however, was the 2013 film “Welcome to the club”. It described the story of Ron Woodroof, an HIV-infected patient who set up a Texas support network for other AIDS patients to gain access to experimental drugs. This production received six nominations from the American Film Academy, including Best Director and Best Picture. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto went to Oscars for their performances. “The Wild Road” was next in line – and its stars, Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, also won nominations for the same awards.

The director did not forget about them and invited them to cooperate on the series “Big Lies” created for HBO – in this case he was also the executive producer. This production won him an Emmy for Outstanding Director for a Limited Series, Television Movie, or Drama Special. It was also appreciated by the American Film Directors Guild.

Vallée was also behind another acclaimed HBO series, adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s “Sharp Objects,” which earned him eight Emmy nominations. The filmmaker recently worked on the Janis Joplin biography and an untitled thriller about a high school student struggling with the trauma of an accident and rehabilitation. Back in 2019, the director said in an interview that he is very careful when choosing his next projects: “Choosing your film is also a lifestyle choice. Will you be happy when you wake up in the morning with the thought that you are working on this story and practically serving it? “.
