Directors accused of rape and molestation of a minor arrested. One was awarded at Cannes

Benoit Jacquot and Jacques Doillon were detained by the Paris branch of the Brigade for the Protection of Minors in connection with accusations of violence and harassment made by Judith Godreche in February of this year. During this year’s César Awards, the 51-year-old actress appealed to the French film industry to break the silence.

In February of this year, another sexual scandal broke out in France. Judith Godrèche, known for her role in the film “The Man in the Iron Mask” with Leonardo DiCaprio, admitted at the César Awards that she had been sexually abused as a teenager by Benoit Jacquot, who was 39 at the time.

French directors arrested by police

The director allegedly started a relationship with the actress when she was just 14, and then took control of her entire life for the next six years. During that time, Godrèche appeared in two of the French filmmaker’s films: “Les Mendiants” in 1988 and “Disenchantment” in 1990. The actress also accused Jacques Doillon of forcing her to perform erotic scenes when she was just 15. According to reports in the French press, both directors were detained by the Paris branch of the French juvenile protection brigade.

The 51-year-old French film star decided to break her silence after Benoît Jacquot mentioned her in the 2011 documentary “Les Ruses du Désir: L’interdit” directed by Gérard Miller. “A girl like her, Judith, who was 15 when I was 40, I don’t think I had the right to be with her. So what? I didn’t care, and as far as she was concerned, I would say she was very excited by it,” the director said.

In February 2024, the actress confessed at the César Awards that she had been molested as a teenager by one of France’s most popular directors. “I know it’s terrifying: losing grants, roles, jobs. I’m terrified too. I dropped out of school when I was 15, I don’t have a high school diploma, I have nothing. It would be very difficult to be blacklisted,” Godrèche, 51, said from the stage. In the newspaper “Le Monde”, the actress said: “I wish Benoît had accepted being my friend back then, instead of taking over me. I didn’t want his body. He disgusted me very quickly.”
