Not just a movie. Bareja also had another hobby, which he kept secret for years. It was illegal

He was the undisputed master of comedy, and his cult productions continue to entertain generations of viewers to this day. Apart from directing, Stanis³aw Bareja had another great passion, but he did not flaunt it publicly. Perhaps because the activity he engaged in in his free time was illegal under the law.

he left his mark on the pages of cinematography as one of the most outstanding Polish directors. His debut was the film “Mąż swoim ¿ony” from 1961, thanks to which he gained recognition from viewers and critics and with which he opened the door to his career. In the following years he created such productions as “Małżeństwo z rozsądku”, “Nie ma róży bez ognia”, “Miś”, “Brunet wieczorową pora”, “Poszukiwany, szukana” or (available on vod.tvp.pl). He also successfully fulfilled himself on the other side of the camera, among others in the last of the mentioned titles he played a district policeman. It was the phenomenon of these works that made him hailed as the master of Polish comedy. And although he loved his work more than life, it was not his only passion.

Stanisław Bareja was also interested in this. He kept it a secret for years.

Few people know that he had many different interests outside of cinema. He was considered an excellent cook and willingly prepared various dishes for meetings with his loved ones. However, the activity he devoted most of his time to was… making moonshine. He did not admit it publicly, as it was forbidden at that time, and certainly on such a scale.

Although he claimed that he didn’t like alcohol, in fact he didn’t drink it at all, the whole procedure was a break from reality for him and he was happy to involve his family in the whole process. – We lived in Mokotów, we would go to the tracks, which is at the end of Woronicza Street, where rowanberries grew. I would climb a tree, and dad would wait at the bottom with a sack into which I would put bunches of berries so that he could make rowanberry – his Katarzyna would say years later.

He modeled his comedies on the world around him. Because of this, Bareja often had difficulties

Bareja was famous for examining the reality of the time in his films and, despite the prevailing reality, he tried to expose the hypocrisy of not only the authorities but also citizens. For this reason, his characters often had a weakness for alcohol, which did not always please the audience. After the premiere of “Brunet wieczorową pora” a scandal broke out, because some circles assumed that he was thoughtlessly promoting on the screen. However, this was not the end.

The making of the cult film also resonated loudly when he tried unsuccessfully to find sausage and ham for one of the scenes. In interviews, he even joked that it would be easier to get plane tickets to Great Britain for the entire crew than to try to get meat props. In the end, the recording included ham, which was purchased at his request in London. As you can imagine, before the film was distributed, the director had to fight with censors who considered the product to be “too juicy” to appear on the screen.
