Almost 24 years after the premiere of Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s film, “Quo Vadis” will return to cinema screens as an animation. The premiere of the production directed by Anira Wojan and Roy Sukankan was scheduled for the end of October, but its trailer was released online several months earlier.
“Quo Vadis” in the animated version. Could it be worse?
To create the animation, the creators used Unreal Engine technology, which many people have previously associated primarily with the video game industry. Unfortunately, this is probably how it should remain, because the end result presented in the trailer of the new “Quo Vadis” leaves much to be desired. I will boldly venture here to say that it is closer to “The Sims 1” from 2000 than to “Shrek” released a year later. Meanwhile, even the fairy tale about the green ogre, beloved by viewers, is far from the level of modern animations, which are created using advanced technologies.
So let’s lower the veil of silence on “Quo Vadis” from 2024, because saying that the animation is not polished enough is like saying nothing. After the success of Tomasz Bagiñski’s short “Cathedral” from 2002, nominated for an Oscar and awarded, among other things, for its artistic design, the bar was set really high. Therefore, taking Sienkiewicz’s classic novel into consideration, the creators could make sure that this one, like the live-action version from 2001, would be remembered by viewers long after the premiere (although this one was also accused of many shortcomings).
The animation “QUO VADIS. The Sword of Love” has little chance of filling cinema halls outside the hours when school trips take place (let us remember that Sienkiewicz’s novel is on the compulsory reading list), and this is really disappointing, because it could become became a nationwide hit.
