Hibiscuses, also called Chinese roses, are absolutely beautiful, somewhat exotic flowers that we can most often admire in warmer regions during the holidays. Meanwhile, with a little effort, they will also bloom in your garden. How to care for them? Don’t forget about proper fertilization. They will look like from a fairy tale.
What doesn’t hibiscus like? Choose the right position
Hibiscus, as befits a tropical plant, has relatively high requirements regarding the climate and the place where it will grow. First of all, remember that practically not at all is not resistant to low temperatures. Therefore, when looking for a suitable position for it in the garden, choose one that will:
- ,
- sheltered from the wind,
- relatively warm,
- spacious, preferably without other plants in the flowerbed, as it grows quite a lot.
As for the soil, it prefers humus, fertile and slightly acidic or alkaline soil. Importantly, it should be constantly slightly moist, but absolutely not overwatered. Providing it with appropriate conditions will make it bloom from the beginning of summer until late autumn.

Does hibiscus like watering? Yes, but you better not overdo it
And this brings us to the next requirement of this capricious yet beautiful plant. Hibiscus plants should be watered regularly, i.e during the growing season even 2 to 3 times a week, later a little less often. However, do this relatively carefully, as excess water may cause rotting. Definitely avoid pouring water on leaves or buds, direct the watering can directly into the soil.
What fertilizer should I use for hibiscus? You can make it yourself
In addition to watering, hibiscuses should be fertilized regularly. However, do this when it is actively growing and not “resting”. For this reason, three best terms are distinguished, more precisely:
- at the beginning of spring,
- after the first flowering,
- in the middle of summer.
Definitely avoid fertilizing in autumn, and especially in winter. In extreme cases, such action may lead to its waste. In addition, remember to use appropriate nutrients, preferably those rich in phosphorus, which has a beneficial effect on flowers. For this purpose, you can buy a preparation for flowering plants or use coffee grounds. Mix 5-6 teaspoons with water and use it to water your plants and it will delight you. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
ADVICE! You can also use coffee grounds in another way. Mix them with the top layer of soil and they will gradually penetrate it.
