Is there life after life? “I left the body and watched the doctors from the ceiling in the corner of the room”

Raymond A. Moody is an American psychologist and doctor who has been researching near-death phenomena for several dozen years. Author, among others, “Life after life”, the first edition of which was published in 1975, returns with a new book, a fragment of which we are publishing.

Moody earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia, his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of West Georgia, and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. “Proof of life after life. Seven reasons to believe in life after death” he wrote together with Paul Perry – co-author of several New York Times bestsellers devoted to the subject of life after life. He is also a documentary filmmaker. He graduated from Arizona State University and Antioch University. We publish a fragment of the book translated by Magda Witkowska. The book will be released on June 20, 2024.

Read an excerpt from the book

“I left my body and moved to the ceiling in the corner of the room, from where I watched the doctors. Suddenly I found myself talking to my sister, who had joined me. I felt a strong bond with her. We had a lively discussion for a while about what was happening downstairs, but then she started walking away. I wanted to go with her, but she kept telling me to stay where I was. “It’s not time for you yet,” she said. “And then she disappeared into the distance, into the tunnel, and I did.” I was left alone.

When I woke up, I told the doctor that my sister had died. He denied it at first, but since I insisted, he asked a nurse to check it out. It turned out that my sister had actually died – and I knew it.”

I came across this story while I was near Fort Dix. I decided to talk to the doctor who treated this patient. He not only confirmed the truthfulness of the report, but also mentioned that it had a huge impact on his approach to his profession. He admitted that at first it seemed absurd to him, so he intended to forget about it – especially since he had numerous duties as a military doctor, and this vision closely resembled the description of a dream. However, when he found out that the patient’s testimony turned out to be true, he could no longer ignore other stories of this type. He promised himself to listen to patients and evaluate their relationships from a different perspective. I remember him saying, “There are things happening that aren’t written about in medical books, and I wouldn’t want to waste the chance to learn something.”

Investigations

Records of out-of-body experiences date back thousands of years. Already in Egyptian hieroglyphs we can see a spiritual double that leaves the body of a deceased person. Much later, the ancient Greeks took up the topic, although only from a philosophical perspective.

The philosopher Hermotimus, who lived before Socrates, became famous as the one who was able to get out of his own body and travel great distances. In this way, it caused a sensation among philosophers who considered it proof of the parallel existence of body and mind. The concept of separating the soul from the body opened the door to the so-called soul-body problem, i.e. research on the relationship between these two elements (based on the assumption that there is such a thing as an immaterial mind).
