The priest encourages you to donate part of your income to the Church. “Give tithes. For your own good.”

Financial issues of the Church have been causing a lot of emotions for a long time. This time, the discussion was provoked by a recording in which the priest appealed to the faithful to pay tithing. This, in his opinion, is a way to fight “the god of money”.

Priests use social media not only for evangelization purposes. Many of them use them to explain various issues, refer to current topics or clarify doubts. There are also recordings that cause considerable controversy. This is the case of the one posted a few days ago on Facebook by Stanisław Szczêsny.

The priest appealed to the faithful on Facebook. “For your own good”

Father Stanisław Szczęsny publishes videos on Facebook and TikTok in which he invites people to pray together and reads fragments of the Gospel. Some time ago, he shared with his followers advice on “how to fight the god of money.” – One of the tools that God gives us to fight the god of money is giving one tenth of your monthly income to the church community, for example a parish – explains the priest. As the priest noted, the viewer “may think that the priest is asking for money.” “And I tell you: for your own good, give tithes,” he explained. He also admitted that he knows many people who share their income with the Church in this way. Payers do not complain because “God protects them, also financially.”

The priest encourages “tithing”. Internet users are not thrilled

The recording, although it did not attract many reactions on the priest’s profile itself, began to circulate on the Internet. He shared them, among others: Center for Monitoring Racist and Xenophobic Behavior, and the reactions of Internet users are not the warmest. Although there are those who point out that the monetary donation is voluntary, there are also voices of indignation and unrefined comments. Some people point out that “religion is the best business in the world”, and they prefer to allocate their “tithe” to other purposes, such as orphanages, animal shelters or nursing homes.

Tithing is the Old Testament custom of giving a tenth of one’s income for a specific purpose. In the Middle Ages, tithe was called a compulsory tax for the Church. The faithful gave part of their crops or income. This is not the first time tithing has come up in discussions about the Church. In 2022, he introduced it in the Krakow archdiocese. It was supposed to be a way to improve the financial situation of the local curia.
