Stationary stores more and more often meet customers’ expectations and agree to return or exchange goods. However, they have certain requirements. What to do if you lose your receipt? Is it possible to return something without a receipt? Customers may be surprised.

Not everyone realizes that only a product can be returned online, regardless of the reasons. In the case of goods purchased in a stationary store, the situation is different. The seller is not obliged to accept the return. However, stores meet consumers’ expectations by accepting them within the specified deadlines and on specific terms. They often ask customers for a receipt. What if you lose it? Is it possible to return goods without a receipt in a stationary store? Check what the law says.

Can I return something without a receipt? The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection says clearly

They have their own rules regarding the return of clothes, shoes, accessories and other goods. They often differ not only in terms of terms, but also in terms of rules. Some accept returns and in return offer, for example, gift cards, others refund the full amount, and still others only agree to an exchange. To return, regardless of whether it is a change of consumer’s mind or goods that are not in conformity with the contract, proof of purchase is needed.

What if you lose your receipt and, for example, your shoes or pants turn out to be too big or too small? Can I return something without a receipt? Shops often refuse, but the law is clear. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection clearly emphasizes that they cannot require customers to provide only a receipt and make acceptance of a return conditional on having it.

Provisions in store regulations that exclude the possibility of presenting proof of purchase other than a receipt are unlawful.

What if a stationary store accepts returns but you don’t have a receipt? This is not the only document that will confirm the purchase. In addition to the receipt, it may include:

  • invoice,
  • card payment confirmation,
  • account statement, preferably showing the time of the transaction.
