The upcoming holidays mean that many people go to seaside resorts to enjoy delicious and fresh fish. In addition, we often prepare them at home. After all, they are healthy, light and simply tasty. However, before you get down to it, it is worth remembering a few things.
Why should you eat fish? You will find a lot of good in them
Fish should be an important element of our diet. And not only because it is an excellent source of protein, omega-3 acids and vitamins (mainly A, D and B). After eating them, you will be full faster and for longer than after eating beef or chicken, and they support immunity and increase the level of the so-called good cholesterol. According to the recommendations of the National Institute of Public Health and the European Society of Cariology, it is a good idea to eat them twice a week, of which one portion (approx. 150 g) should be fatty sea fish such as salmon, cod, herring or mackerel. However, it is important to store and prepare them properly. Otherwise you may hurt yourself. All because of the parasites they may contain.

What parasites are in fish? Watch out for them
Fish, like other animals, may be infected with parasites that are dangerous to our health, such as roundworms or tapeworms. We immediately assure you that the problem mainly concerns poorly prepared or raw fish.
- Nematodes they most often live in the digestive tract of fish, but sometimes they are also found in their muscles. For this reason, it is better to be careful with ready-made store-bought fillets. They will also be found primarily in marine fish such as mackerel, cod, tuna, sardines and herring.
- Flukes they may be in the ropes. In humans, they usually nest in the bile duct, although some varieties prefer the lungs, where they can spend up to 20 years.
- Tapeworm can be found in seas and oceans all over the world. Most often, but not exclusively, they occur in herring, trout, perch and salmon. They parasitize mainly in the body or intestine.
Eating fish with parasites may result in serious food poisoning, so it is important to follow a few basic rules.
At what temperature do parasites in fish die? Remember that too
Most parasites that feed on fish die after appropriate heat treatment. Cooking, frying and baking should be done at a temperature of at least 60 degrees Celsius. If you buy fish in brine, make sure that they have been thoroughly frozen beforehand, as low temperatures will also cope with them. What else should you pay attention to?
- Only buy fish with verified sources. In the case of fresh ones, pay attention to their smell, as it should be neutral or have a delicate scent of the water from which it comes. If it is unpleasant, do not eat it. When it comes to frozen ones, take a closer look at the glaze. A layer of ice that is too thick usually indicates poor storage.
- It will also tell you about the freshness of the fish appearance of meat. It should be elastic and return to its previous shape when squeezed. If this doesn’t happen, it’s most likely broken.
- After purchasing the fish you should place in the refrigerator or freeze immediately. In the second case, remember not to do it again after defrosting.
- Wash your hands thoroughly both before and after cooking. In addition, remember to use separate boards, knives and dishes, and clean them immediately after use.
- If you feel like eating sushi, don’t buy meat in a typical supermarket, but in a proven place where you are sure of its quality. Freeze them additionally at home.
ADVICE! It is best to cook the fish in water (throw it into boiling water) or bake it on parchment paper or foil. This version will be much healthier and lower in calories than deep-fried. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
