“Strefa mroku” to kultowy z 1983 roku, będący kinową wersją równie hitowego serialu z lat 50. o tym samym tytule. Its originator was , who engaged three other directors: Joe Danry, George Miller and Johnny Landis. Each of them was tasked with creating one of four stories that were to be connected by a common introduction and ending. The latter, however, chose his own story to raise the issue of racism.

The movie version of “The Twilight Zone” was supposed to be a hit. Pomysł Landisa przeszedł do historii z innego powodu

Głównym bohaterem epizodu Landisa był Bill Connor (w tej roli Vic Morrow), wokół którego skupiała się fabuła. The racist, famous for his arrogance, was supposed to be on the run from the Germans, who recognized him as a Jew and thus sentenced him to extermination. When the original version reached Warner Bros., the producers had several reservations, making changes that included the recording of an additional scene. The director started working, but needed two child actors of Asian origin to make it happen. He asked for help from co-producer Folsey Jr., who, through his secretary and her husband, found 6-year-old Renee Chen and 7-year-old My-Ca Le.

Due to the fact that the planned course of shooting violated California law, the photos were to take place at night, and the use of so many pyrotechnic elements required additional permission for children to participate, Landis was looking for a different solution. Time was pressing, so he decided to engage them, of course with remuneration, but without official documents, and to shoot the scene on private land in Valencia. And so it was done. Preparations for the staging began and on July 22, 1982, at 2:00 a.m., all those involved showed up. Pierwsza część nagrań przebiegła pomyślnie i jeszcze tego samego dnia o 21:30 wszyscy mieli pojawić się na planie ponownie w celu stworzenia pozostałych ujęć. This time, however, not everything ended as planned.

“The Twilight Zone” is not just a title. A tragedy occurred on the set of a horror film. Three people died on the spot

The last scene included American helicopters arriving at the village while the hero and his two children were to escape through the swamps. The first attempts to implement it ended in failure, pilot Dorcey Wingo, driving the Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, had trouble controlling it while unloading the explosives. Mimo to reżyser był zdeterminowany, by wypełnić swój plan i nie docierały do niego uwagi ekspertów ani innych członków ekipy, którzy podnosili, że to może zakończyć się . At 2:20 the recording started again. At that time, Landis, famous for his reckless approach to pyrotechnics, kept telling the pilot via walkie-talkie to fly lower. Ultimately, the helicopter hovered only about 7.6 meters above the ground and when they started detonating the charges, according to the previously discussed strategy, Wingo lost control of it. Additionally, the simultaneous explosion of two more explosives damaged the tail of the helicopter, which spiraled down, crushing Morrow and the children in front of not only the film crew, but also their parents.
