Edmund Fetting was born on November 10, 1927 in Warsaw, the son of Stefania and Edmund Teodor. After the outbreak of World War II, the family moved from a charming villa in Mokotów, which he inherited years later, to a rectory in Baranów, where his mother’s brother was the parish priest. It was there that he developed his passion for the stage, playing in amateur theaters, although he still secretly dreamed of becoming a theater actor. Thanks to his brother, he learned to play the piano and accordion, but when he informed his parents about his plans, they became furious. – Do you want to be a musician? And some jazz at that? – he quoted in one of his interviews the words of his father, who wanted him to work as an architect.

Not wanting to give up on his dreams, against all odds, he took part in the entrance exams to the Warsaw University. His parents could not come to terms with the fact that their son would be a comedian and, disappointed with his decision, they broke off contact with him for almost a decade. It was an extremely difficult time for Fetting, especially since he didn’t enjoy the index for long. – You are not suitable for the theater, you are too sad and you lack talent – the master himself, Aleksander Zelwerowicz, allegedly told him, arguing for his removal from the list of students. Failure turned out to be motivation for him. So he joined the cast of the Opole Land Theater and two years later he successfully passed the external examination, after which he started his career.
He found his way in the industry quite quickly, and not only viewers but also critics loved him. He played dozens of roles on the most important stages in the country and in cooperation with the most outstanding directors. The breakthrough was undoubtedly the play “Crime and Punishment”, staged at the Wybrzeże Theater in Gdańsk, which also improved his relations with his family. “It’s no wonder that I finally felt happy then,” he said, recalling the first words of praise he heard from his father. He performed brilliantly not only on stage, but also in front of the camera. He had many excellent titles to his credit, such as “All Souls’ Day”, “Ashes”, “Life once again”, and “Black Clouds”.

Fetting was considered gloomy due to his facial expression, but in private he was extremely cheerful and friendly. – He was a troublemaker out of this world! Very mysterious, it’s true. Everything “Ą – Ę because of tissue paper” – Stanisław Michalski said about him. – Great class and culture, so of course Mundzie and I… drank very culturedly. How did he combine partying and hard work? I could never understand it, he added. There was no denying that he was also specific. During rehearsals, he would change his clothes up to three times to “maintain hygiene”. He paid great attention to his appearance, he always had to be neat and elegant with pressed trousers and a perfectly tied tie. – This was his dressing style, rather inartistic. Everything is buttoned up. A perfectionist – he was recalled by Krystyna Łubieńska in “Dziennik Bałtycki”, who secretly had a crush on him years ago. And, as we know, she’s not the only one.

It is no secret that Fetting also stole the heart of the woman who first heard him at the “Rudy Kot” club. “I was very much in love with him,” she confessed. She was the author of the ballad “Before the Dawn of the Day” from the film “Prawo i fist” and the song “Deszcze niepoczne” from the opening sequence of the series, which he sang.
Then we became closer. We met often, but for some reason, that’s life, our paths diverged. I missed him many times and thought about him many times because we hadn’t seen each other for so many years
– she recalled in the book “Agnieszka’s Alphabet” by Jan Bończa-Szabłowski. Although he could not complain about his success with women, he was not interested in them. It was common knowledge that Fetting had been sharing her life with a certain young dancer for years. He subordinated almost everything to him, and although he had a reputation for being a miser, he did not skimp on expensive gifts for him. Therefore, when in the 1980s, when his beloved, instead of love, unexpectedly chose a foreign career, leaving him alone, he completely broke down. He became apathetic, avoided company, and his health deteriorated. Finally, in 1993, he completely suspended his career and was never heard from again.
