In July 2024, a year will have passed since the tragic event that shocked the whole of Poland. The drama took place in one of the housing estates in Legnica. 24-year-old Vadym L. was running away from a police pursuit. The man was completely drunk, did not have a driving license and was banned from driving. According to “Fakt” and local portals, the trial in his case ended on Tuesday. Now the perpetrator of the fatal accident is waiting for the verdict, which will be handed down on June 25.
The website quotes Barbara Mazur, who spoke during the final speeches. The prosecutor wants the perpetrator to be sentenced to 25 years in prison and a lifetime driving ban.
The collected evidence clearly indicates that Vadym L. committed the acts charged against him, including the crime of murder committed with eventual intent. On the evening of July 18-19, 2023, he and his friends drank alcohol. After drinking alcohol, he got into the car and drove to a nearby gas station to buy more alcohol. The family of the killed 21-year-old and her friends were present in the courtroom on the last day of the trial. Ola’s father said in an interview with “Fakt” that the perpetrator drove under the influence of alcohol twice. – You have to ask yourself whether he was driving sober at all, because I have the impression that he is a constantly drunk driver and always posed a threat. What country do I live in? Such a punishment, which was imposed on the accused for driving under the influence of alcohol, did not arouse any fear or respect in him. He thought he was unpunished, he continued to get in and drive, he added.

I’m very sorry that I have to be here with my wife to defend my daughter’s rights to a fair verdict, he said.

During the trial, 24-year-old Vadym admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol and to escaping from the police. However, he did not admit to murder. His defense asked for him to be cleared of this charge and for the lowest possible sentence. In his final words, the 24-year-old was supposed to ask his victim’s relatives for forgiveness. However, the girl’s parents demand a harsh sentence.
